I was out caching alone the other day, and another geocacher drove up just as I was getting out of the car – He approached with the line “usually I cache with my exwife, but she saw that you were alone, so she told me to go meet you”…. then he proceeded to ask all sorts of questions and stuff aimed at figuring out if I normally cache alone, who I normally cache with, my name, etc etc.
He seemed nice enough, but it was kinda uncomfortable, and it got me thinking that my caching name is just a bit too close to my real name, and perhaps I should change it.
So, that night I tried to do that, but couldn’t seem to figure it out. Can anyone help out?
07/15/2008 at 1:37 pm #1892210Geocaching.com no longer allows you to change your name. The only way around it is to log in with a new name and a new account. You can then re-log your old caches under your new name. In “extreme” cases Geo. Com will allow a name change but it will be hard to convince them. As for your name, I think it is a good caching name.
07/15/2008 at 1:41 pm #1892211Contact LDove and see what she did. I think it was about a year ago she changed names.
07/15/2008 at 1:48 pm #1892212Write [email protected] and ask to have your name changed. As long as you don’t abuse this, they will be glad to change your name for you.
07/15/2008 at 2:15 pm #1892213Creepy… it does sounds like this guy who approached you was searching for a different type of “find”.
When you get your name changed on geocaching.com (they are open to doing this if your username reveals too much about who you are in real life or if you feel you are being geo-stalked, both of which would apply in this case), shoot me a PM or email so I can change it on the WGA site.
07/15/2008 at 2:28 pm #1892214thanks for the feedback – it looks like I am going to be “hope2findyou” from now on – not a big change, but I think enough to do the trick. I emailed geocaching.com – I haven’t gotten a response yet, but I’m confident they will change the name for me.
yeah, it got creepier when he sent me a “friends” request at midnight – but other than that one time, the people I have met on the trail have been great. I actually feel much more comfortable caching alone in the woods than I do caching alone in the city. My only “issue” when I’m alone in the woods is if I get lost, but then I always have my cell phone, and I always know EXACTLY my coordinates, so I figure I’d be able to be found again eventually.

Could some people still get the wrong idea from “hope2findyou” (though it is better because it does not include any part of your name). Like you are hoping to find a special someone through geocaching? I believe this is partially why the “Lonesome” was shortened to “L” in LDove?
How about “not_interested”, “buzz_off”, or “take_a_hike_bozo”? π
07/15/2008 at 10:25 pm #1892216π π π Jeremy – I am cracking up – π Take a hike Bozo, now dang that is a funny name and I actually LIKE it! HA! Yep, that is why I changed mine too, got some weird e-mails. Now the L represents my first name. Groundspeak will change, but you have to have a good reason. I do kind of agree that even Hope2findyou may also sound like you are looking for a person rather than an object, I did not think of that when you e-mailed me the other day. Kinda stinks ya gotta worry about these kinds of things hey? π π

07/16/2008 at 1:33 pm #1892218Maybe you could change it to “HopeToFindIt” or “HopeToFind” You could be a “HTF”, instead of a “FTF”.
07/16/2008 at 2:14 pm #1892219I’m thinking a name like “Elm Grove Police Department Vice Squad” might keep the stalkers away…
07/16/2008 at 10:35 pm #1892220Did geocaching .com stop the name change again? It’s only been a couple of months since we changed ours.
Bec if you want a stalker I could get some friends together and come over. Just say when and we’ll set up a schedule.07/17/2008 at 5:45 pm #1892221Hoppe2FindYou,
I’m going to suggest that you do NOT use “Hope2FindYou” either, since you’ve announced that you want to use it on a public forum. It might give your stalker another way of keeping an eye on you.
I’d suggest that when you change your name, don’t tell anyone except your closest geo-friends what your new “handle” is…via private message on here.

Are you so sure??? Did you, or did you not, turn your lights out at precisely 11:52 pm?

You need to get your watch fixed…use your GPS for the correct time; it was closer to 11:59pm….
