This post is worth exploring.
Ask your kid cachers what their most memorable cache finds are. If you can’t come up with 5, no problem, try top 3 or even their singular most memorable find.

Ask -cheeto-‘s kid what his top 5 favorite caches are and I GUARANTEE none of them are ammo boxes.
What a good idea. So I “surveyed” Matt (age 10) and here’s the scoop:
#1 – GCVDYE – gilligan’s island – a regular. not an ammo can. this is his favorite cache because you have to cross a creek to find it.
FYI – we logged this in August of last year.#2 – GC1CT2N – PUC | Grubby little fingers – Small. not an ammo can. No real “swag” at all in this cache. An obvious kid favorite.
#3 – GC1DC1G – Camelback Cinema | The Passings of Mr Pink – “Other” but it’s a micro with no swag essentially. He loved this one for the container.
#4 – GCPDBP – My best friend… Where is she? – Not chosen. No swag in this one. He said this was the funniest cache he’s found.
#5 – GC1519Z – Houdini Caching Tour – Small – Not much swag though we traded travel bugs when we logged it. He liked this one because he had fun running around downtown appleton and learned a lot about Harry Houdini.
You’re right. None of them were ammo can’s full of swag. We have found our share of these type of caches together…
If you’ve done any or all of these caches you will get the idea that what makes a “kid friendly” cache, at least for a 10 yr old boy is not at all what I expected. He never gave “finding lot’s of cool stuff” or “the cache had lot’s of travel bugs” as a reason for his favorite choices.
Food for thought.

07/16/2008 at 5:15 am #1892254Our 3 grandchildren introduced us to geocaching and many of our outings have been with them. A year ago the only ones they were interested in had to have swag. It’s still pretty much the same with the boys 6 and 9, but 11 year ols Emma has become an all around cacher. She went out with me last Saturday and we walked .35 winding our way through 5′ high wild parsnip and then had to stand in stinging nettle while retrieving the cache and signing the log. It was an ammo box, but the only thing she wanted was the TB. She’ll go with us any time and for her the harder the hunt the better. We usually take her along on return trips to dnfs and she usually ends up with the find. The boys are good for 3 or 4 finds and then get distracted. I plan on taking her on a 20 cache outing soon before school starts again.
07/16/2008 at 11:43 pm #1892255my 12 year old son said he likes any kind that you can climb a tree for. His favorite is Der Schlechte Affe Geht Deutscher! by Uncle_Fun (GCRN4J) 😯
my 13 year old daughter said ” multis are fun, nanos suck” – her favorite is Dinosaur Dash by Pjphoto1 (GCXXNZ) 😈
my 14 year old daughter hates geocaching, and says her favorites are the ones you reach out of your car window to get – but even those are dumb. 🙄
none of them mentioned swag, because we usually don’t find much, and when we do it is more geared for the really little kids.

Yeah, interesting side topic.
Dark Raider (Robin’s 6 year old) does like to find swag, and it is one of his main objectives. Unexpectedly, he also likes cemetery caches and looking at the stones. He also likes caches where he gets to climb a tree. He hasnt gotten a chance to do any real cool containers yet, so maybe next time I head to the Fox River Valley, he will have to ride along. (I am quite sure he would have loved Hoist That Rag, a very cool Fox Valley cache that I visited yesterday.)

Pulled this from the thread starter about micro’s. I’m detecting a theme here that young boys anywhere from 6-16 love to climb trees (just like this 38 yr. old boy does) and think I nailed it on the head with the PUC caches (Parent Unfriendly Cache), being that many of them are barking up the right tree.
07/27/2008 at 7:45 pm #1892257Yep, my son who is now 12 only likes the caches where he gets to climb a tree. Otherwise he’d rather be sitting in the car with his Nintendo.

My 8 year old daughter likes caches that have short walks on trails and where she can do something like throw rocks in the water and look for frogs while I sign the log. She also enjoys “technical” hides, where the container is made to look like something else. And caches near playgrounds are always a hit with her.

Swag doesn’t really enter into it much. I’m more likely to trade something than they are.
