Anyone watching the Cache Rescue list? Another one popped up in the Appleton area. Was one I was expecting for some time.

This incident highlights my main reason for not wanting newbies planting caches.

Team was logged on for 2 months. IE, they registered, then disappeared.
    Team found two caches
    Team hid two caches
Team had 2 caches archived by the reviewer for lack of maintenance.

I guess everyone has the right to play for as long as they want. I think the point should be if you are going to place them, pick up your toys when you are done. There are no “rules” against placing caches as newbies. Why can they not have the same fun as those of us that have been around a bit longer than them.

How many did you find before you hid your first cache?

    three 😳

Not trying to support or hang anybody here, but could there be certain circumstances that may be preventing ones from following up on their responsibilities? I was out of the caching world for a few weeks last winter due to being burglarized. With everything going on at the time with repairs from the break in and dealing with the insurance company, caching never crossed my mind. A cacher in my area had some maintenance to do on one of her caches. The maintenance notes and emails were piling up with no responses from her. As it turned out, she had become quite ill and had been in and out of the hospital for a few months. Of course on the other hand, an almost identical situation as above, but instead of being ill, this guy was just lazy.

I consider my son and I to be “noobs” at this yet (we’ve got 18 finds since April when we started), and due to my self-imposed lack of experience, I’m holding off on creating and placing my first cache, although I’ve already started planning it out.

As of right now, I’m planning on holding off until I hit 50 finds or until sometime next Spring to do it. I figure by then I will have seen enough caches and had enough experience that I think I’l be pretty confident in what I’m doing.

It really depends on the person/people doing the hiding. Are they responsible and committed to the requirements? These are quite clearly laid out but, like anything else in life, some people are just uncommitted or lazy.

Personally I don’t see how you could hide a cache before attempting at least a certain # of them, but what # that is, I don’t know. Otherwise, how the heck do you know what at least a reasonable hide is?

But I just don’t think there’s a way to legislate a solution to this problem via any gc guidelines/requirements.

That’s a very responsible limitation to set on yourself.
Ironically, since your so responsible, you’d likely do just fine without waiting … or at least you’d “clean up after yourself” 8)

I think my first hide was after about 15 finds … that was very low, I must admit, but that hide turned out fine. However, then a few weeks later I hid my next … it was a multi and I made many mistakes … I ended up going back out 3 times before I could get them approved … all ended well, but in hindsite if I had my finding experience under my belt, I would have saved myself much frustration.

What kind of mistakes on the multi? We’re about to put one out and think we’ve got it OK, but maybe not(?). We have done 150 caches and have put out 5. We haven’t run into any problems finding the multis but we’ve read logs where a waypoint goes missing. (Sorry if this is off-topic.)

When I was brand new to the hobby, I started planting caches right away. Many of them are still up and running and over 1 year later I am still participating. My first placement was a puzzle. (please keep your comments on puzzles for another thread 🙂 I think in doing so, area cachers were like “who is this cheeto?”

      #1894029

Cheeto makes an interesting point. The issue is not really how many finds you have, but whether you are committed to maintain your caches after you place them. I would say that most caches placed by new cachers who do not go on to find 100 or so end up being archived for lack of maintenance. On the other hand, if you are committed to the game, placing caches after few finds usually works out. Unfortunately, there is no way to see the future, so there is no good way to determine whether a new hider will be around after a few months.

Remember that the very first cache ever hidden for this game had nothing to compare it to, it had to be hidden first so someone could find it. A lot has happened and changed since then. Sometimes the best way to learn is by trial and error on one’s own. Of course I have yet to place a cache of my own. I’m getting closer though, I started to think about it.

Not really a direct mistake BECAUSE it was a Multi … actually not really Multis now that I think about it. I hid a series of caches in Pleasant Valley Nature Preserve (southwest of Saukville, WI) a few years back … 3 regular caches, to find a mystery 4th. Turns out that 2 of the 4 were too close to someone else’s cache and another was on private property (no real way of knowing it, I believe a utility owned right-of-way that was off limits to the public by about 25′ with no markings). It was a mess … but turned out to be a cool series … after I de-messed it.

This subject has come up before. I had mixed emotions about it then and now. To be fair, Newbies have brought us some really great caches as well as really lame caches. see: Inspirations from neophytes. I guess we just have to accept the bad with the good and encourage our freshman cachers to set high standards.

        Here’s one I looked for last week…. GC1F45B

The cache owner has found one cache and placed one….it now has three DNFs in a row and no finders.
