Is finally here! As a team of three we been geocaching around Wisconsin for about a year now and finally have signed up.
Though we are pretty untalented to when it comes to actually finding a cache, we still love to geocache : )Though now that I am here I could use some tips!
What have you found to be the best GPS?
We use a Garmin navi in the car and GARMIN eTrex Legend Handheld GPS when out side of the car and I am really starting to hate my etrek. It always losing reception and gets confused rather easily : /So I’d like to buy another one that is more rugged then the one in the car and a little more useful then the one i have now : )

Well I have found over 1,000 with my Garmin GPSMap60Cx and I don’t know if I ever lost signal….my old Garmin Vista lost signal all the time. If you are going to spend the money get a unit that will “autoroute” and buy the detailed maps…..

I also use a Nuvi, and love it. Currently use a Legend C, and it has been pretty good, though I am looking to upgrade to a Colorado soon.

08/28/2008 at 7:38 pm #189514008/28/2008 at 7:38 pm #1895141I started out with the Garmin 60cs and had absolutly no problems with it until I was forced to upgrade to the Garmin 60csx after my puppies decided to eat then antenna off of it. I have since had it replaced through Garmin and have never had problems with either the replaced 60cs or the 60csx.

Went to Best Buy today, armed with my 40% off coupon….they wanted 599. Even with the coupon that is still 360 bucks…..
will wait until the price drops a bit…..which I think it will when the new one comes out.

08/29/2008 at 3:36 am #1895144We use a bottom line Nuvi for the car and it works great (except when it is recalculalting). I use a Etrex Legend (the old blue model) that is always 30 feet off and easily confused (to the point I carry a compass when caching). My wife uses a Etrex H that works fine, for a basic model it is very good.
Oh and Bec we used the Etrex H when we placed the temp caches 😀
08/29/2008 at 5:02 am #1895145We have the etrex H, too. Kind of primitive next to most, but it gets the job done for us. And the best thing is, when you can’t find a cache, you can blame it on that antiquated receiver you have!
Really, we like it and it’s the one we chose to get last fall when we started out, and it does the job we need it to.

For a little over my first 500 finds I used a Garmin etrex (old yellow). I handed it down to my son, but I reserve the right to use it if need be. Currently I use a Garmin 60Cx and just love it. The old one I never had any problems with unless I was in a lot of tree cover. The newest one, never had a problem with.

I have been caching for less then a year & I use a Garmin Etrex Legend.
At the most it is usually 13 ft off & I have not lost a signal (unless you count the time I didnt notice the batteries were almost dead & it turned itself off just as I was getting near a ground zero…..lol).Hope to meet you on-in-along the trails

I have a garmin map76s when I got it it was $550 after 1000 finds I will still not give it up.
my info about a gps you need
electronic compass because it will still point in the correct direction when standing still

Moved to a legend cx for a short period. Then I bought a 60c used (loved it). Now I have a colorado thanks to Zuma finding BB 40% off coupons. I was lucky and found it on sale. The verdict is still out on it. Chances are I will use both the 60 and CO on the trail until I know I can trust the CO.
The groundspeak forums are beating up the colorado pretty bad. So I would be leary.
Go with a 60csx. I haven’t heard a bad thing about it.

I agree, I own a 60cx(no electronic compass or barometric altimeter) and love it. Before I bought this in spring of 2006 I owned dozens of different gps models, Magellan, Lowrance, and garmins. This is by far my favorite.
I had the electronic compass in my VistaCx and did like it, but decided it wasn’t necessary when I purchased the 60 series. I was glad to save the extra $40 toward some maps.
I do like the size on the etrex line better for hiking, but HATE the rubber around the unit that always seems to come loose after about 6months of ownership(at least on all the color etrex models I have had).
