I am looking at buying a Garmin Auto GPS for myself and my mother and would like some input on two models. I am considering the Nuvi 350 (refurbed for $150) and the nuvi 200W (new $140). Any input as to which one might be better for geocaching. Is one easier to enter addresses?
11/21/2008 at 6:07 pm #1898135I don’t have much experience with the Nuvi’s except for playing with them while searching for one myself.
What I can say is that unless you’re using it for an MP3 player, or picture viewer, the only difference between the Nuvi’350 and the model I have (Garmin Street Pilot c330) is price and dimensions. The Nuvi is flat whereas the Street pilot looks like an old model TV set from the side. But the c330 runs only $175 new.
I can’t say enough about my street pilot. It works flawlessly, even through busy cities, and never loses signal. It loads fast, and even my 77 year old father could use it the first time he tried. (saying a lot for a man that’s had the clock on his VCR flashing 12:00 for 10 years!)
11/21/2008 at 10:32 pm #1898136I have the Nuvi 350 and love it. However I put the geocaches in as POI’s rather than favorites and they dont show up on the screen like a favorite would. but I have an infinite amout that it will hold vs. the 500 favorites. I solve this by putting the same waypoints in my 60csx also mounted on the dash. then when I find a cache I search for the next with the 60, then search the custom poi’s for the cache to route. AS I am searching for a cache my co pilot (wife) will be searching for the next one on the nuvi. As for differences in the 2 nuvi models look at what you want for extra features. I think the mapping and routing will be the same.

I havn’t had the opportunity to play with a Nuvi yet, but I understand they have a transreflective screen that shows brilliant color and contrast in the brightest of ambient light. My C330 does not and it can make it hard to read in midday sun.
My C330 was waiting for me to negotiate downtown Atlanta in peak rush hour traffic with the message “Lost Satelite.” For the most part, she is right there with the current position.
11/21/2008 at 11:09 pm #1898138I have recently picked up a refurbished nuvi 200 from eBay and I located a topic on the GC forums
http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=193374
that utilizes GSAK and a POI loader with a macro that turns the nuvi to a paperless system for geocaching. The custom POI list seems to only show a limited number of nearest caches though they are all in there. I think I currently have 1800 caches loaded as custom POIs that show the entire cache page text, hints, and 4 most recent logs.

11/22/2008 at 12:04 am #1898140Thanks for the VERY timely thread…
I asked for cash to purchase an auto GPS for christmas and will have to make a decision 🙂
I’ve never used one…
Do the auto ones come with good street maps by default (unlike the handhelds)?
I will watch this thread with interest….

Yes it come preloaded with street maps. Pulled mine out of the box at best buy and it routed me home. Like I needed that but you all understand.
I can show you it sometime if you wanna look?
11/22/2008 at 3:09 am #1898143We have a Nuvi 200, just the bare bones model and absolutely love it. They are quirky at times but you adapt some. I have not tried the paperless caching with it but I may have to look at that some.
If you want a quick lesson on the Nuvi let me know & I can give you a run thru..but it will have to wait to Wednesday.
One thing I have found that they are great for is caching out of your normal area, our worked great in South Carolina and we expect on other vacations11/22/2008 at 4:35 am #1898144I have a Garmin NUVI 750. I like the widescreen a lot and it works fantastic. I haven’t used all of the features yet but what I have used I like.

I haven’t had either of those problems. And I hope I never do. 😀

I just used the macro and it works great. However I dont use the GC# and can’t seem to figure out how to remove it from the waypoint name. Have you done this?
11/24/2008 at 9:20 pm #1898147I’ve had my Nuvi 650 for almost a year now.
I love it.It’s great for the CAR PART of geocaching.
But when I park the car I switch to my handheld. The Nuvi units are great … but I would not consider them rugged enough (or water resistant) … I would never consider taking my Nuvi in the woods.

But when I park the car I switch to my handheld. That’s exactly what I intend to do once I get a GPS for the car.
And use it so I don’t get lost as much! And lessen my chances of totaling another vehicle.
Gotta love getting new gadgets.
