Thanksgiving Eve
It’s Thanksgiving Eve and people are out
rushing from store to store and giving a shout.
The turkey is thawing at home in the sink
as they skate to the store on the parking lot rink.
They push and shove their way to the counter
of the deli display to see what’s to offer.
Of coleslaw, there’s plenty and macaroni too,
but where is that colorful marshmallowy goo?
The bakery is next. Have to get the pie.
If there isn’t fresh pecan Uncle John will just die!
Potatoes, pumpkin and yams delight.
I hope this year there isn’t a fight.
Green beans, fried onions and soup from a can.
I sure hope there is room for it all in the van.
On the way home to this family of mine,
I see hundreds of people all in a line.
What’s going on? What are they doing?
The cars all honk at me to keep moving.
I turn the corner and what do I see?
People looking for food. People like you and like me.
With the price of things going up all the time
and jobs disappearing at the drop of a dime,
it’s time to be thankful. That’s what it’s about.
This year Uncle John and the family will do without.
I gave our feast to those waiting there
in the cold, damp and bitter air.
We still have our turkey at home in the sink
and hopefully a lone bird will make people think.
We can’t see tomorrow or around the bends
but always remember to treasure your friends.
So as you sit down tomorrow to sup,
Be thankful for what you have and keep your chin up.
No matter how hard things may get,
your friends are behind you one hundred percent.
Happy Thanksgiving
