      Hey,

I can’t believe we’re asking this, but you know, hauling a canoe all over the state gets old sometimes, and we figure we’ve earned our stripes on this type of cache. So….are these Great Wisconsin River caches in the Wausau area ones we could reach on hard water? We might be looking for adventure once all the holiday visiting has passed! Thanks.

If the timing is right, I might be able to go with…but you can go first on the ice :> No idea if they are winter friendly though.

I can’t say for sure, but my feeling would be that there is too much current in that area of the river to trust the ice. However, having said that, I would also not be surprised to learn that there are snowmobile tracks all over the place. Myself, I would save these for a great day of paddling.

There are some great area caches to snowshoe though. In fact, with some of the other talk of bookmarks, I’m thinking of starting a snowshoe friendly bookmark of Wausau area caches.

If you want hard-water caches there is one “Transportation” that is a whole lot easier in the winter and the ice is very safe going to that one. 😉

Hey OPS, would that be the one over near the Schofield Dam? We got all the rest last summer—with the canoe—but misjudged which slough to paddle, got out, realized we should have gone one more, then realized…..we have to get across that water before the thunderstorm hits!
I’d slogged through the green muck to the other one before that, though.

I would have thought there’d be too much current, too, but was surprised to see that some folks got the bandits “Skeleton Keys” series last winter on the ice. I won’t say we’ve *never* cheated a paddle cache, we have done a couple on the ice. We also hauled that canoe up north for nothing last summer, too, when the prospect of trying to paddle a lake near TE’s place in gusty winds just didn’t mesh with our concept of “fun.” We’ve softened our thinking a little after that!

Hey, I resemble that remark! 😀

Now why is icing a paddle cache cheating? Instead of a paddle, you bring a shovel. Instead of a canoe, snow shoes. It’s still “special equipment” and it’s still a lot of work!

I would be very interested in that bookmark.
Sounds like it would be a fun time to get a group together and do some winter caching.

Trekkin’ would agree, gotta run. He needs to ditch his “period correct” bindings on his snowshoes. When we did some last winter while he was using those, I’d say the caches for him were about a 6! LOL My shoes are period correct, the bindings are not. There’s a reason the old ones fell out of fashion!

          Yes,

          Transportation

It’s a very lonely cache too- and there’s no reason for it. Easy walk through the ice shanty village this time of year.

As far as the ice goes, I’m just saying I would have no problem ice walking Skeleton Keys but wouldn’t be too comfortable ice walking GWRKK (and I’ve done both series). It all has to do with how close to dams and amount of water movement. Besides, I think it would just be much more fun to paddle it. I’m not worried about anyone “cheating” a paddle cache by walking the hard stuff. Heck, we love paddle caches and wouldn’t want to waste one. 😯

We were out on the snowshoes today and had a GREAT time. I’ll start working on a list tonight.

Okay, that’s good information. Maybe we can exonerate our previous DNF either on our way north or back. Thanks!

I will second OPS’s comments that I would not want to walk to the GWRKK caches. I do know that some of the water you’d go across would be fairly deep if you did break through the ice. The “final” is the only one I would trust (with closer access) but w/o…. the coords for it… well I wouldn’t risk doing the cache for a smiley.

I asked Knoozer (the cache owner) the same thing and he strongly recommended against trying an ice crossing. Still on my to-do list along with a few of the EC river ones…

You guys know the waters and ice up there, we’ll heed your advice. Thanks!

              Snowshoe bookmark begins:

Thanks to OPS for the bookmark. Can’t wait to get up there and strap on the old snowshoes.

Great bookmark OPS.. was just thinking it would be nice to have a list of snowshoe-able caches.. seeing as we just keep getting more of the white stuff!
