Here is a hypothetical situation?
1. You find a cache that requires a additional logging requirement, like a picture or a certain piece of info. Even though you do not have the required information, you log the cache, hoping that the cache owner doesn’t catch it. You get the note that your log is deleted, What would you do?
01/16/2009 at 12:51 am #1900443First of all, if there is an additional logging requirement, we do it. We have found a small handful of caches that allowed a “bonus” log if we did some additional task. I think we actually took the bonus two times this way, have left the others.
As a cache owner, I can appreciate the intent someone has when they ask us to do these things. I would show the same respect for another’s intent that I’d expect from them.
That said, you’re asking about a hypothetical situation in which I *do* choose to cheat the owners’ intent. If I get caught and my log’s deleted, the most I’d do is hide in a corner in embarrassment!
01/16/2009 at 2:19 am #1900444hypothetical or not, the idea is one of one’s own integrity. To knowingly log a cache that you have not fulfilled requirements for or anything that may be against the rules (of geocaching or in general) reaps volumes on your personal integrity and the integrity of the game itself or of the life situation. If a smiley face on a web page is worth cheapening one’s self, I guess that is a persons prerogative. This question does kind of sit close to home as there is a cache that I have found, signed the log, but posted a note instead of a find as it requires a photo. Now could I edit that log to say I found it, sure, would the owner even be notified? no, not on an edited log. would the owner even care? probably not. but my own integrity will not allow me to log it as a find until the photo requirement is complete.
So, hypothetically, if my log got deleted, I would say I got what I deserved.

01/16/2009 at 6:34 am #1900445We only log caches where we meet all the requirements, including ALRs, find all the stages, and sign the logs. I’m not a big fan of these ALRs, but now that they are all given the mystery designation, I guess they are ok.
01/16/2009 at 4:29 pm #1900446I have a few caches that have additional log requirements and will delete logs after sending a reminder email that a part is missing. If it isn’t sent in a timely fashion I will then delete the log. 🙁
I will not claim a cache unless I have the required pieces. I went to an Earthcache here in Milwaukee quite awhile ago but my camera didn’t work. I need to go back and take the picture. Sometimes I think the cache owner is expecting too much (an Earthcache I did in Kentucky had 18 parts to complete) but then it’s up to me to decide whether I want to do it or not. It’s all about integrity! 8)
01/16/2009 at 4:42 pm #1900447As an owner of several EarthCaches, I can totally relate to your question. EarthCaches clearly state their requirements (task, photo) on the cache page yet the number of people who log without doing has been interesting. And yes, I have deleted a few logs and have received a few not so nice emails in return.
In general, is not finding a cache YOUR CHOICE? If you do not wish to complete the ALR’s then, why do it? Or, if you have done half, go back and finish it or just do not log it.
01/16/2009 at 8:54 pm #1900448I believe in getting all the required info needed for that cache, such as the EarthCaches require and AuntieNae mentioned. If you don’t have the info, trust me…owners do watch.
So……if you can play the game and play it by the rules, do so!! If you can’t play by the rules and try to cheat your way to higher numbers, you are not fooling anyone but yourself.
Trust me on this one…cachers DO watch what other cachers do!! What has come up in conversation are such things as some cachers changing “DNF’s” to “Finds” after a cache is archived.
Should I care?? Personally….NO!! Let them do what they want. It just looks bad to the Newbies coming into the sport.
01/20/2009 at 4:16 am #1900449Just wouldn’t do it. I’ve walked nearly a mile for a writing utensil after forgetting mine, and I’ve passed on caches because the camera was home that day. Now that ALRs are required to be mystery caches it makes life a lot easier. There were times when we nearly missed these because we glossed through the description on the Palm while on the fly.
Now none of that really answers the question as to what I would do if my log were deleted. Really, there would be two choices: Accept it gracefully and move on, or take the time to complete the requirements correctly and re-submit my find.
