Time for the question from Birdin’
She asked: Okay, dream big and be creative. If money, time and distance were not constraints, what are three things you’d like to see the WGA provide for the geocaching community?

Again I ask that all candidates (including Birdin’) anser the question

    Thanks

    1) I’d love to see us develop a great curriculum using geocaching and GPSr technology for educators’ use. I know there are some things out there, but I think we could develop really nice units that incorporate aspects of Wisconsin history (4th grade), natural and environmental history (infused throughout) and team building/problem solving skills.

    2) I’d love to see us create a “package,” including lots of GPS units, to assist groups that want to host an event on getting started in geocaching. At the LaCrosse event, it would have been great for all the newbies to have units with which people were familiar, so they could quickly learn to input coords, then go out and have fun. We could market such a package, which would include all the great presentation materials many, such and Renee and Bec, have already created. Target groups could be convention and visitor bureaus, alternative educational settings, Scouts and whatever else we can imagine. Pete already is doing something like this with his group, and there are surely more groups that wouldn’t immediately come to mind.

    3) Host a big event up north. I know, I know, logistics and man power and all that. Think about it, though. Many tourists come from out of state and head right up there, winter and summer, and we could take the lessons learned from dream #2 above and build an event that could draw those same folks into our fold. We’ve done great caches all over, but honestly…..if we had to pick some of the best, they’d be up there in the Outlands! We could see that cache density map TBC posted glow even brighter over more of the state by doing this.

Big dreams. But my experience has taught me that throwing out the big dreams helps us think beyond the obvious and trim back to create something new and exciting, even if it isn’t that big.

Since I’m interested in getting new members and keeping members, as well as activating members, my three things would be:

    1. Plan, Publish, and Distribute pamphlets about our Association. These would be handed out at Events and classes, and even placed in caches so that we got the word out. Have stickers made to be placed on cache containers that state this cache has been placed by a WGA member (similar to the logo on the cache page). Different sizes for the different size caches. 😮

    2. Host new member events throughout the state that focus on this website as well as other aspects of the sport(paperless caching, route planning, different GPSrs available and how to use seminars). 😀

    3. Welcome materials for the new members (and at this time, the existing members) including; nametag, lanyard for compass or GPS, logging pen or pencil, etc. 💡

Wow… I’m a big dreamer, so this could be fun! LOL

First, I think in would love to have a committee, people dedicated to traveling around the state (or further), when needed with all the equipment and materials needed for an awesome presentation on the sport. Like mentioned by others, the GPS units would be of great value, having Magellan, Garmin and maybe another popular brand, so people can see the differences, etc.

Second…I would love to see a Caching adventure sponsored by the WGA. Maybe a Cruise or a trip over seas. Australia sounds great this time of year!!

Third….hmmm I know there are other businesses like this, but if the WGA had the ability to create their own Team Building program, using Geocaching in combination with other outdoor sports, like white water rafting or weekend long hike and camping.

    Only three??

    1) Host Events
    a) Monthly Meet & Greets – rotate them across the state perhaps quarterly in each region.
    b) Geocaching 101 Workshops – to reach out and recruit new people -offered in each region
    c) Teacher/Leader Workshops – to incoporate geocaching in the schools and other youth group programs

    2) Make GPSr’s Kits available for leading workshops

    3) Promotion
    a) develop a WGA & basic geocaching brochure to distribute
    b) create a geocaching 101 show to broadcast on the various cable channels across the state
    c) nametags, necklanyards, hats, t-shirts that promote WGA for members
    d) work with the various tourism councils and chambers to promote state tourism

Question: If money, time and distance were not constraints, what are three things you’d like to see the WGA provide for the geocaching community?

    1. A brand new Oregon gps for everyone with more than 50 cache finds.

    2. A gas card good for 200 free gallons of gas for everyone with more than 100 finds.

    3. A brand new laptop loaded with GSAK for everyone with over 200 finds.

this assumes of course that money is no object, as specified in the question.

    1. WGA sponsored social events in all corners of the state. Note that not all events have to be a big production to be fun and enjoyable. I think Alex’s event this weekend probably cost, oh, around $0 other than the door prizes. (I won a match container, yea!) Of course, we might need to define just what “sponsored” means, but the publicity would be golden.
    2. WGA sponsored “Learn to Geocache” events held at libraries/schools in all major population centers on an annual basis. (What pop centers? SE Wisconsin, Madison, Green Bay/Fox Cities, Wausau, Eau Claire, LaCrosse, maybe Hudson/Menomonee and Hayward/Rhinelander (yes, I know they aren’t that close together))
    3. A “lending library” of popular geocache models, so that people in the market for a new unit can try out different models before buying.
    4. Free beer (Oh wait, they only said 3. Darn.)

Maybe I don’t dream big enough, as 1 and 2 seem achievable to me.
