Hey, there have been so many serious and weighty questions in here, and I remembered one asked by a member last year that provided a lot of fun reading as well as personal insights into each candidate. I wish I could remember who asked the question so as to credit them correctly….I *think* it may have been Peace B/WU (sorry if I’m messing that up, hopefully you know who I mean).
So……we have a day to go caching. Anywhere in the state. Tell me what I can expect if we go caching together. Tell me where we might go, what kind of caches we might do, what kind of shenanigans I might expect. Do I have to be ready at 3AM? 🙄 Have fun with this one! I’ll answer my own question a little later.
01/21/2009 at 12:49 am #1900750Well Gwyn, you should know what caching with me is like already 😉 . Pre-dawn start, because why would you waste a perfectly good sunrise on the road. First cache just after sun-up, and last cache right around sundown. After that it’s time for a big meal, because we only stopped for tasty beverages and pastries.
What you saw over the course of the day was a good slice of the countryside in our chosen area, with some great walks mixed up with the quickies you’re sure to find along the way. Quite a few country roads linked up the small towns that had a handful of caches, and if we were really lucky we found a park that had several caches so we could get out for a nice long walk.
All the while you were regaled with the nonsense that seems to spring forth from my lips, and a couple pipe dreams and grandiose plans were discussed. At the end of the day, plan on being tired, sore, scratched-up and smiling!

01/21/2009 at 3:18 am #1900752What a GR8 idea – the two of us out caching. 😮 Lately, I’ve been intriqued by EarthCaches, so try to pick one that I can do and then choose regular caches in the area. I like to mix it up and keep the day interesting by doing regulars and micros as well as doing rural and urban caches. I go to the cache prepared to replace a container, or log and baggie, and restock the cache with goodies so “kids of all ages” will have something to choose from. Starting early in the day, we’ll move at a comfortable pace, enjoy the scenery, take lots of pictures and have alot of laughs. We might have to do a “phone a friend” when stumped at a cache and will probably be called for assistance from someone else. 🙄 I like to try local eateries after a day of caching and will even try to fit in a cache or two after eating, with flashlight in hand. It’s not about the numbers however I do recognize the milestones. We’ll make plans for another day of caching in the near future, maybe a day of puzzle caches we’ve solved or a few multi’s. No matter what, it will be a GR8 day!
01/21/2009 at 4:39 am #1900753Pretty much, I am pretty flexible .. it would depend upon what type of day the others going with are seeking to have:
1) 24 hour geocaching marathon day – leave at 4 AM, drive to an area that we can mix it up between parks, park & grabs, hikes – with us on the go the entire time – bring your snacks, no food stops on this trip.
2) a more relaxed day – leave early so we can take advantage of the daylight hours, focus on the caches that take us to more interesting locations, plan on a nice dinner before heading home.
Been there, done both. My typical role is navigator but I have no problem with letting someone else take the lead. I am also used to being the driver, even on the 24 hour runs, but have no problem with letting someone else drive. I am also used to navigating while someone else drives .. hey, what works for you.
01/21/2009 at 8:11 am #1900754Question: So……we have a day to go caching. Anywhere in the state. Tell me what I can expect if we go caching together.
Answer:
Well, be ready for anything, as KSpud found out Sunday night.
Basically, we I head out it will be for the entire day, leaving under the cover of darkness to arrive at the first cache at daybreak, and then caching until the sun goes down. Dont plan on any fine dining along the way though–for that you will have to cache with Marc. I prefer to dine on the finest gas station food I can find, and will usually select a Kwik Trip (due to there better than average baked goods.)
We will probably have one specific cache in mind as our ‘destination’ cache that looks good for some reason, and then get everything we can in that general area. I like to choose one destination cache, and chose the cache based on recommendations or interesting logs or an interesting cache description. While in the area though, I like to get em all, and aint too picky if they are multi’s or EarthCaches, field puzzles or whatever.
After caching all day, expect a nice dinner and a lot of laughter. In fact you should plan on a lot of laughter all day, because there may be a bit of hilarity and ribald humor along the way. The humor is not too sophisticated though, but there is plenty of it. If there is a Chipotle anywhere near where we are caching, expect to stop for dinner there, as there is no Chipotle in Eau Claire, and I just love Chipotle.
Also, be prepared for a sudden change in plans at any point in time. I am basically a fool for FTFs and usually have my phone set to chime if a new cache is published where I am caching. If the phone chimes, expect me to check to see if the new one is near, and if it is, we will be off in that direction likity-split. Nothing better than poaching a FTF in the Fox Valley from my friend Sagasu or poaching a FTF from the Wausau Mafia…Well, I can think of one thing better—-poaching a FTF in La Crosse—just love to get one on Dick when I can.
When do ya want to go?

01/22/2009 at 4:15 am #1900755Well….. a day with Da Fu. We would probably be heading out for some EarthCaches for sure, probably Waaaaay up North where I’ve never been. We’d be scouting out some caches with nice hikes, wonderful views, probably not urbans way up there.
I can guarantee the will be filled with laughs , story swapping, education lessons with the EC and tally up the day with dinner some place simple. There would be a bunch of picture taking for sure, some brainstorming on ideas for new caches and containers.
Our day together would be laid back but full of fun and a lot of hiking!! What better way to share a friendship and love for caching!!
01/22/2009 at 5:21 pm #1900756Well, I’m one of those omnivorous geocachers. I find all types when they are “in my way”. I will say, however, that the trips I enjoy the most are those that involve a short (1-5 miles) hike in a forest or prairie. If I can find 3 or 4 without having to return to the car, that is even better. Being located close to both the KMSF and Bong RA, I have lots of places to do this sort of caching.
But, to be honest, any sort of geocaching makes me happy. Now that I have procured some snowshoes, even the deep snow doesn’t bother me. Now, if I could just convince people not to hide micros on the ground….
01/23/2009 at 1:03 am #1900757You all sound like a day caching together would be a lot of fun. If I haven’t already cached with you, I hope one day we can get together on the trails.
Caching with me, well, count on Trekkin’ being along. Although I have been known to get up really early to cache, I’d rather sleep till at least 5:30 before hitting the road, that is unless somwhere along the way I have the chance to also see some kind of cool birds, like maybe Saw Whet Owls or such.
Often, I’ll have some sort of crazy destination cache in mind, one that has us hiking in remote country, climbing up steep hills or trees, or maybe canoeing or some kind of water crossing. Having learned my lesson, if it’s also a puzzle, I’ll ask that you have tried to solve it, too. 😉 I won’t discriminate on cache type, because I enjoy looking for all kinds. On the way to our destination, we can grab whatever comes along, but count on a little travel out of the way if there’s a letterbox or EarthCache near by. If we do cemetery caches, I like to study the stones along the way to finding the cache. I’ll be distracted by such things as ripe thimbleberries to eat, birds or animals to spot and photograph and whatever else is out there to catch my fancy. Fungi seem made to be photographed, too. I like the woods and waters more than town, but we can get some of those, too, especially if it includes a little local history or lore.
You might learn a few birding skills along the way. We’ll have a lot of fun laughing, telling stories and pausing for something to drink eventually. At day’s end, like most of the rest of you, we’ll finally realize we’re hungry and find some fun place to eat. If it’s a little local restaurant, all the better. So, when do we leave?
P.S. Dave, when we get around to serious caching down your way, Bong has long been on my list. Good birding and good caching, sounds like a dream locale! If only the Riddler hadn’t been archived…..
