I’m on the planning committee for a Boy Scouting event (Great Lakes Centennial Jamboree) that will be held at the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) site in Oshkosh, WI on September 25-27, 2009. I’ve been asked to coordinate a geocaching event for Saturday September 26th suitable for Scouting youth. I have access to about ten Garmin GPS units with the local council, and we have pretty much free range of most of the EAA grounds. But I have never put together an event of this type, as opposed to simply finding caches with my spouse.
Are there any Geocachers out there that would be interested in working with me to make this happen?
Web site for the event is at http://www.glcj.org/

03/02/2009 at 1:13 am #1902917Well, we would like to allow the maximum number of youth to participate in the event. Perhaps placing some small prizes in the caches (or a coupon for something at the trading post).
I’m open to suggestions really. I’ve only done one other event at a much smaller camporee. My concerns are around:
- how to get maximum throughput
how to ensure people don’t “spy” on locations
how to quickly get them up to speed with using the GPSHas anyone run a similar event?
09/30/2009 at 8:09 am #1902918The Great Lakes Centennial Jamboree was an outstanding success, with over 10,000 scouts and adult leaders in attendance. See http://www.glcj.org for details.
It is sad though that the Wisconsin Geocaching Association never directly responded to my postings to offer support or publicity. It would have been a wonderful marketing opportunity to have literature available there on geocaching and the WGA.
09/30/2009 at 12:50 pm #1902919I second that it was a GREAT event! We stopped in at the geocaching area and looked for a few of the ‘temps’. We even helped out a few scouts and their parents out “in the field”. Picked up a TB from Averith to help move along as well! I thought those doing the geocaching portion did a great job with the set up, the display of various containers and log books, and overall explanations of the game! Kudos to those who stepped up and got involved you did a great job!

10/01/2009 at 3:53 am #1902921I have to agree, other than some initial confusion where family camping was to sign in we had a great time. There was so much to do and so little time, our group was only 3 webelo’s but we put a lot of miles on the feet on saturday. Big trikes, the snake and robotic hangar, and the museum took up most of our day.
Unknown to me someone in our pack had drawn a patch or logo that got us front row seats for the evening stage show. The show was a good mix of fun and serious moments with traditional scout presentations, Miss Wisconsin, a magician, and The Dweebs all emcee’d by Bill Jartz.
Well worth all our headaches and sort feet to be a part of!
10/02/2009 at 12:04 am #1902922My wife and I helped out with the geocaching and had a fantastic time. I wish I would have taken the time to walk around a little more, but I was having so much fun doing the geocaching and teaching people about my favourite hobby I was reluctant to step away. 🙂

Wonder why not? Seems just the sort of thing we have an association and a board of directors for.

i think if you read the first 3 posts in this thread that we did ask for something more specific, and the respnse to that was made as a general request for ideas, which any visitor to the forum could have responded to. The WGA is not just the Board of Directors, and these type of general requests can most reasonably be responded to by local folks, which in fact did occurr.
Thanks a lot to those that helped with this request. I think the thing to keep in mind here, is that communication is key and we are all doing what we can to help, especially if the requests are clear about what is needed.

Apparently the OP does not concur.

Very True Zuma. WE are the WGA, all members can contribute.
thanks to those who did directly work with Mike on the Jamboree.
As far as materials on the WGA and Geocaching in general, there are available sources for those things and a PM to any Board member could have assisted in securing those materials (please correct me if I assume too much).Mike’s last post prior to the event was in March. If you think like I think, No additional requests for assistance means that all bases have been covered and all is well. So, I guess all in all, I echo Ralph’s comment about communication.

10/02/2009 at 3:25 pm #1902928I am well aware that the BOD is not the entire WGA, but they do represent it. Please note that my original post clearly distinguishes the two. And yes, it is good in this case that local geocachers picked up the ball and ran with it to help make the event a success.
But here we have a case where a WGA member is apparently unhappy with the OFFICIAL response of the WGA. Yet, rather than ask “What could we do better,” we get blame-shifting to the requestor!!!
That’s just truly unfortunate.

Blame shifting implies that the OP did something wrong. My comment states no such thing.
and yes, the question of “what can we do better” is valid. On the other hand, if there is no communication that something better is needed, are our hands not tied?
