I’ve made initial contact with the Appleton parks dept again this year to hold an Appleton CITO park cleanup event.

    Choosing a Date:
So my question to those interested, what date would you prefer? Looking at these 3 possibilities:
    4/18
    4/25
    5/2

May 2nd & 3rd is the “Official” Groundspeak CITO weekend. May 2nd is the date of the Wausau WGA sanctioned CITO Event as well as several other Flash Mob events around the state. Most of those events are far enough away that it might still work to plan something for May 2nd if that is preferred.

    Locations:
Any special requests for park/trail locations you’d like to see us help out at this year? Any you would not?

    Food & Drink:
Hemi wants a potluck. We’ll have a true potluck this year. Yeah!

And I will again be bringing some quality Seattle coffee to start the day off right as that seemed to be a hit last year.

    Other ideas:
Any other event ideas to make this a great event? Send me a PM or post here. No idea is a bad idea!

We did a nice job on Jones Park last year, but the 5 star terrain really was a leg-stretcher! Something a little leveler would be nice! ❗

I’ve never been to a CITO event, so I am hesitant to suggest a park. But given that you have done this before, maybe this idea makes sense: If you have a relatively large turnout, choose a big park, like Memorial or Pierce/Alicia/Lutz. If it is likely to be more mid-size, something like Erb, and if the groups tend to be small, there a few neighborhood parks…

Are CITOs held in conjunction with other events, like flash mob or finding caches, that you need lots of parking or to be near permanent caches? Depending on the date you choose, you would have to be aware if the city has any events that take place in parks or near them (like art fairs, 5Ks, music festivals…).

Sorry I have more questions than suggestions!

I plan to go to the Wasuau one, so please, no conflicting dates.

I vote for the 25th because on the third I start my racing season.

Thanks everyone for the input so far. I think I have enough info to plan the date & location with the parks dept.

We’ll go for 4/25 for the event date.

Please keep the ideas and responses coming!

For those geocachers in the area that are newer and/or have not been to a CITO event, here are links to the last 2 Appleton CITO events:

    GC19PTZ – Let’s Cleanup Jones Park – Appleton CITO 2008
GC1180N – Not So Superfund Fox River Cleanup

Volunteering to cleanup a park is a VERY rewarding experience! Trust me that you will feel like you did a good thing if you participate and you’ll get to meet other area geocachers. This is a great opportunity to give back to the parks department that graciously allows us to hide geocaches in our parks without extensive permission processes.

I will continue to keep everyone posted here until the cache page is published.

There is Telulah park in Appleton, it is right on the river and has plenty of wooded area.

I didn’t make it to the 2007 CITO along the Newberry trail into Telulah park, but I think that one should be OK for the time being.

The 2008 CITO at Jones Park was a great success and I was especially proud of all the Recycles that we gathered. Let’s be sure to separate and recycle this year as well.

I am looking forward to this 2009 CITO as it will clean up 3 of my favorite parks, all within a few blocks of my house. I think -cheeto- and I have settled on the Pierce/Lutz/Alicia combination which is also good news for many of you who have yet to solve the dozen or so Puzzle caches and finals that lie hidden in those parks.

About a week before the event, I will post a complete list of all the S|S caches that are in these 3 parks. I don’t think either of us are interested in placing temp or new perms, although there are a couple spots left (believe it or not). I know of 2 caches that I can place for FTF opportunities, but that’s probably the extent of anything we can put out for the event.

The focus of the event it not so much Cache-In, but Trash-out. I hope many of you attend as I will be distributing a Press Release this year to get some good media attention – something we can always use!

The Appleton 2009 CITO event cache page is now in the reviewer queue.

Event date has been switched from my last update. It will be on Saturday April 18th starting at 9am at the large pavilion at Pierce Park in Appleton.

As seldom|seen mentioned already, we will be cleaning 3 parks for the 3rd consecutive Appleton Spring CITO event.

The event is now published on GC.com:
    GC1NJ9R- 3 For 3 – Appleton CITO 2009

It should also be showing up here on the WGA events list when the site admin approves.

I will now be updating the cache page with any changes.

We hope to see everyone there!

I don’t suppose someone would want to give us a generic list of the puzzles to solve in these parks? If you listed all of them to be found in all of the parks, it might not give too much away.

I’d love to solve some, so that if in the process of trashing out, we are near a cache, we can cache, too. Hoping we can make it, will depend on whether or not some kind of birthday thing is set up for my dad. Last year was his “landmark” birthday, but at his age, every year is a landmark now!

I’ll get a list together and posted to the cache listing a month beforehand. Of course, you could always attend the CITO in Wausau, I hear there giving away clues to mine…

You know, I actually read that prior message, too. Maybe I’d better celebrate my OWN landmark birthdays while I can still remember I have them!
