This sticky forum topic is provided for WGA members to share their recommendations regarding good places to eat in this region.
When you make a recommendation, please provide as much information as you can. At a minimum we need the name of the restaurant, type of food served, and the city/town where it is located. We are all geocachers, so the coordinates of the establishment would also be helpful. 🙂
If there is a need to edit or delete your recommendation at a future date, just post a note in this topic and one of our forum admins will take care of making the change.

I’ll get this started by staying very local.
If you are visiting Kenosha and planning to stay a while. Consider Franks Diner. By far the best greasy spoon and breakfast spot I’ve ever been to. Franks Diner is a historic landmark and has been in business for over 80 years. Franks is located at 508-58th Street or N 42° 35.002 W 87° 49.051
If you are just passing through Kenosha on I94 check out The Brat Stop Good food, live entertainment, and great prices. Lot’s of celebrities have passed through these doors over the years. The most recent was Hillary Clinton. Hope that doesn’t scare some of you away! 😀 The Brat stop is located at the intersection of I-94 and Hwy 50 or N42° 34.079 W 87° 57.377
If you’re in Kenosha, and looking for a fine dining experience, there are several places to choose from. Chops on the Lake is my favorite. Chops is located on the Kenosha Lake Front at 5722-3rd Avenue or N 42° 35.032 W 87° 48.884
Lastly, if your out caching on our fantastic lake front and have the kiddies along, a fun place for them would be Trolley Dogs Best hot dog place around and fantastic prices. If you stop here, take the kids on a trolley car ride for just 25¢ Trolley Dogs is located at 5501-6th Ave or N 42° 35.148 W 87° 49.114
If it’s coffee you’re looking for, then The Daily Dose will surely help you get your fix. It’s located at 6010-40th Ave or N 42° 34.846 W 87° 51.413 If you’re up early enough on Thursday mornings, you can meet up with a group of local cachers that meet at 6:30AM every week. We stay until we leave.
Places to AVOID:
Marina Gardens was a great place for a long time, but has gone way down hill.
Maraz has had more than one visit from the health department and we’ll leave it at that.

You misseed my favorite Mexican restaurantin Kenosha! Between Hwy 32 and 31, on Bridge Rd is Tacos El Rey. Great Mexican food and very reasonable prices!
P.S. There is another Tacos El Rey on Lathrop Ave. in Racine, too! (same management)Don’t know how I missed that one. It’s a block from home! We almost lost it in the tornado last year!

If you are in the Hartford area, I would have to recommend The Mineshaft. A half block north of hwy. 60 on 83 (the main drag). We have been going there for almost 20 years, and have never had a bad experience there and never left with an empty stomach. I don’t think they take reservations but if you go on Friday nights for a fish fry, go early or you will have to put your name on the waiting list. In the past we’ve been told about an hour wait, but it turns out to be about fifteen minutes. And that is when they are packed. They also have a game room on the second floor. Street parking the front with additional public parking in the back.
Sorry. I don’t have any coordinates. I’ll try to remember to shoot some the next time we’re up there.

There are better fishfrys, but not for the price. All you can eat for $4.95. The Mineshaft also has the distinction of being the largest restaurant in Wisconsin. It’s a great place to take kids of any age.

Since parking on Main Street is very often an unsuccessful crap shoot, I’ve included some additional parking coordinates:
N 43 19.099/ W 088 22.675 Back Lot behind restaurant. There IS a rear entrance to The Mineshaft from this parking area.
N 43 19.125/ W 088 22.622 This is a gravel parking area a bit further away, but the abck entrance is still within reasonable walking distance.
N 43 19.102/ W 088 22.772 This is a paved parking area which is located BEHIND the businesses which are located ACROSS the street from The Mineshaft. The restaurant is still easily accessible via the Main Street Annex, an enclosed walkway with stairs AND a elevator for those with physical limitations.
The Mineshaft serves an entire menu of Italian, Mexican and American cuisine. They also boast one of the best Friday Night fish frys in all of Wisconsin. If you’re going morning caching, they also serve a full breakfast menu, with an exceptional Sunday Morning Breakfast Buffet.
Waukausha
Don’t know the coordinates, but Great Mexican food would be Jose’s Blue Sombrero. We eat here every time we go to Milwaukee, they open at 5 on the weekends, and i would be there early if I were you. Its a very busy place, its worth the wait, get the combo plates, 3 items for 10.95 i think with plenty of beans and rice, we take some home every time.

On Fridays they have all you can eat fish & chicken. On Wednesdays they have all you can eat chicken wings for $5. Also pitchers of beer on Wednesday is $5.
Sunday brunch is pretty good also.
Over in Kingston Wisconsin you will find 1 of THE best places for prime rib… aplace called The Kingston House.

They are open for lunch Tuesday thru Friday. But they only serve dinner on Friday & Saturday nights. And both nights are buffets. HOWEVER their Friday night fish buffet is 1 we drive 1 1/2 hours for once a month. If you love a good prime rib you will have to try their Saturday night buffet. They do their own prime rib in house & it melts in your mouth. Besides prime rib they also have 1 other meat hand carved as well (usually ham). This is another trip we make once a month. Among other items on the buffet are broasted chicken; mashed potatoes; home made stuffing; gravy; corn fritters; bbq ribs; both nights have a fried fish. Also not seen on a buffet often is boiled cabbage & creamed gizzards.
Prices are very reasonable also with Friday being about $11 & Saturday being about $17. They start serving at 5pm but they get busy right away at 4pm when they open the bar. You can buy your dinner & relax with a few drinks before your number is called. If you ge there at 5pm dont be surprised to have to wait an hour to be seated.When in Kenosha a stop at “THE SPOT” drive-in is a must… It is especially known for their bacon double cheesburger with the works, a common epicurian delight for late night imbibers…

W 087 50.117When caching in the Burlington area a stop for “The Worlds Best Burger” at FRED’S PARKVIEW INN is always a treat… The atmosphere is very casual, it’s seat yourself when a table opens up and you have to place your order at the bar with your table number… Even though it’s a pub & grill, it’s very child friendly, I’ve been bringing my son there for a birthday burger since he was 8 tears old, he’s 23 now… A trip to Fred’s is not complete without an order of their home made chips…

W 088 16.628To add to the thread, a little further north (but if Milwaukee isn’t southeast, why are we in that region on the WGA page?!), three great places – all on Farwell Avenue: The Eatery , Comet Cafe, and Ma Fisher’s Diner. In order: inexpensive and great happy hour, inexpensive and the best, weirdest, “diner” food you’ve ever eaten, and cheap, urban, authentic diner experience!
