As if I didn’t already have enough wrong with me, I must have turned or lifted wrong when carrying up a box of books from the basement to go to goodwill. Does anyone have any suggestions that might help? Besided drugs that is. I’m about up to the eyeballs with oxycodone now and really don’t want to keep taking it. π

03/19/2009 at 8:21 pm #1904091Alternating heat and cold will help; heat to relax the muscles, cold to help shrink the inflamed nerve. The first 48 hours is the most important. If it is worse, you know what to do… This is advice from my chiropractor for a NEW back problem. If something is out of alignment, it won’t adjust anyway if the muscles are tight or spasming.

I got back spasms 2 years ago from looking up at our Christmas tree. You never know what the slightest wrong turn will do! π―03/19/2009 at 9:11 pm #1904092UGH!! I feel you pain! I had to get my sacral and the rest of the pelvic region put back into alignment to relieve the worst of my sciatic nerve pain. Then physical therapy to re-learn to walk properly (wat a difference that made). This all happened 10 years after the problem started.
I don’t have the intense pain like I used too, I still get some discomfort from time to time. For that I use heat (mostly) and cold and get off my feet as much as possible. And for some odd reason, if I get my hubby to put pressure on the point of most discomfort (right side of the tailbone), it seems to help some.

03/19/2009 at 9:19 pm #1904093Thanks for the advice. It looks like Peg-leg Pete (the hedgehog) is going to have to do without his heating pad. Sorry Pete, but I think I need it more than you do right now. As soon as I get home from work, I’m going to steal it from him and see if it helps any. I’ll have to put the ice packs in the freezer too. I have plenty of them from my knee surgeries.

But on a good note (since I hate having nothing but bad news), my knees feel the best they have in 15 years! π
03/19/2009 at 11:39 pm #1904094No guarantee, but a couple of good swift kicks to the shins with steel toes might take your mind off of the nerve. Although this will only be temporary, it might also give you some new problems to worry about. Other than that, I got nothing for you. Sorry.
03/20/2009 at 1:33 am #1904095π Thanks for the laugh! I spent the last 2 1/2 hours in bed with the heating pad, got up and not too much pain. The problem is now that I’m sitting, I can feel it getting worse. Work tomorrow is going to be an adventure. They already look at me strange because I’ve been hooked up to a monitor for the past two months and now I’m walking around like I’m drunk. π

03/20/2009 at 6:54 pm #1904098If you’re looking for a quick fix, consider going to the chiropractor once or twice. The suggestions above are also helpful (although I rarely prescribe the kick to the shins! lol ).
Longer term, physical therapy is probably your best best to preventing this from being a chronic problem. Also consider antiinflammatories and possibly muscle relaxants.

03/20/2009 at 7:48 pm #1904099I remember my dad having that problem on and off for a while. I remember that he couldn’t sit for very long or lay down for very long. He seemed to be most comfortable standing up.
I noticed one thing with my back, although it’s a different problem than you have, and that is I get less pain when I stand or sit if I’m squared up to something instead of twisting a bit. For example, I have a recliner that I like to sit in when I watch tv or read. The chair is in the corner of the room, only place it fits. I have a tendency to twist my body a little bit to face the tv. This gives me terrible pain. I feel less pain if I make a conscious effort to sit straight in the chair and just turn my head a little.
Unfortunately, I’m too dim witted to do this all the time. After a few days of doing this, when my back feels better, I go back to my old ways.
03/21/2009 at 2:06 pm #1904100I had been suffering for years. PT didn’t help. Chiropractics – no help. Drugs – no help. Surgery fixed me! (I mean my back). Now I get special attention whenever I check in to an airport.
03/21/2009 at 3:30 pm #1904101Oh man! I didn’t want to hear surgery! I know they won’t do that right now anyways… they still haven’t figured out what’s wrong with me. UGH! Ok, I’m just going to cross my fingers and hope it all fixes itself real soon.
So far, I feel much better if I’m either standing or lying down. Unfortunately, that won’t help for driving or while I’m at work.

03/26/2009 at 1:54 am #1904103Just wanted to say thanks for everyone’s suggestions. I had a major step forward today! I was at work on the phone with the doctor’s office (how ironic is that) and there was a loud click and I felt somthing in my back move. BOY DID THAT HURT! But, the pain eased up after that. Now the pain only goes about 1/2 way to my knee and is more of a steady pain instead of stabbing, throbbing pain. Hopefully it will continue to get better. Time for a few more aspirin and the heating pad again.
