Anybody out there like to people watch? Or maybe do or say something just to see what kind of response or reaction you get?

Usually when I go to the bank on paydays I will ask for two rolls of half dollars. No big deal. I will spend them when I’m out and about. The funny thing is when you hand them over to pay for something, and the cashier will just stand there and stare at the things. I’ve been told that it is not real money, I’ve had people stand there waiting for more while I stand there waiting for my change, and I’ve even had one call the manager over to see if it is legal money only to have the manager not know.

Being on the north side of forty, I guess I can understand people half my age not knowing because many have never seen a fifty cent piece. But what about some of those that are clearly 10-15 years older than me? When I was a little kid, it was quite common for most people to receive and use them on a fairly regular basis. The latest ones I have used were minted in 2001, and I know the mint still makes them, although I’m not sure if the newest ones go into circulation or are minted for collector sets.

I’ll give some to my wife to spend and she just can’t believe the reactions she gets from people.

There you go, some cheap fun while you are out caching. You’re going to be stopping for some snacks or something to drink anyway. Take some fifty-cent pieces with you next time and see what you get for a reaction.

I once had a clerk tell me “we do not accept tokens” when I gave him a gold dollar coin

there’s no spot for a 50 cent piece in their register…

You can get the same reaction with 2 dollar bills. I got 15 of them for Christmas and recently spent a few.

Do you look to cause trouble, or does it just find you naturally?

And these are the same folks who can’t make change unless the cash register tells them how many quarters, nickels, and dimes to return 🙄

I couldn’t even tell when I last had change counted back to me. It has literally been years.

Another fun thing to do is get and entire pack of new $2 bills. Before you open the pack get some rubber cement and paint one end of the pack when it dries remove the paper keeping the bundle together. Then when you pay for something just peel off as amny as you need one at a time and watch their face. Now that is good fun.

Hemi, that is too much! 😆 😆 😆

I used to get half dollars for my allowance, and my dad had to file the end of the slot on the piggy bank because it wasn’t long enough for me to put the coins in. And this was WAY back when when half dollars were legal tender. 😉

This all sounds like fun and I have done some of it myself.

One other thing to do is to go your local McD’s, Burger King etc. and when your bill comes to $5.86 give them a $20 bill and a $1 bill. They usually go , “Huh?” Then hand you back the $1 bill and make change from the twenty.

For advanced hijinks (or amusement) also give them a dime and a penny!

I bought something today at Harbor Freight for $8.48 today. I gave the clerk a $20 and .50 expecting $8.02 back. His cash register said he owed me like $242.02 and I said….COOL! Must have had fat fingers, but would only give me the right change back. 🙁

I love it. I’ll have to try that one.
