When placing a cache on land managed by the DNR do you have to wait for a response from the land manager after you submit the geocache placement notification form before you can submit the cache to the reviewer? If so, what length of time are we looking at? Thanks, in advance for your help.

My local DNR office usually doesn’t get back to me about them unless there is a problem so I just submit my caches for review at the same time I mail the form to the DNR.

The DNR around here mails back a copy of the form. I don’t post the cache until I get that…usually within a week.

We get a report back about 50/50. And my old college roommate is at the DNR office…

My understanding is these forms are required notifications but once you file them you are good to go. If we’d wait to get them back we still wouldn’t have some caches published. I’m sure a reviewer can chime in on this.

We hand deliver ours to the DNR office in Oshkosh. That’s one advantage of living in a city with a DNR office! They always mail the form back to us. The DNR does controlled burns of areas occasionally, and needs to know if a cache is placed in the area. I have not heard of a cache owner being contacted previous to a controlled burn, but I know of at least one container that was “torched” along the Wiouwash Trail last year. We have also found a few that should NOT have been placed! DNR ‘protected’ areas are NOT for caches! They are for nesting birds! DNR ‘managed’ areas are OK, if approved.

There are a few cache owners (so we’ve heard) that say that they submitted a form, when they did not, just so the cache gets published. This “shady” practice may soon catch up to us, especially with the number of new caches being placed in the good weather.
I have seen a few caches with laminated copies of the Notification Form in the cache. Not a bad idea.

But to answer the question…hide the cache, submit the Form, submit the cache. If it is NOT approved, disable it and move it. All of our submissions have been mailed back to us.

The term notification means that you are notifying the DNR of the cache placement, and not seeking prior approval, so the answer is that you do not need to wait back for a response. If there is a problem, they will let you know.

However, in the long run, there is a lot to be gained by a face to face contact with the land manager and talk about what you have in mind, and discuss areas that the land manager would prefer not to see increased traffic. This is better for the ecosystem, is more considerate of other users of the land, and fosters good will between you (and the general geocaching community) and the land managers. So, it is always a good idea to meet the land manager and turn them in, in person, when that is possible. It is always a good idea to stress the positives of cache placement in bringing more people to see and use the public lands, and work cooperatively with DNR land managers.

I am lucky that I live within one mile of a DNR center and at the bottom of hill of one of the places I have a few caches hidden so I normally go in and get the approval face to face which is nice – always good to build up a rapport with the DNR folks. The only query I have is whether the cache is hidden in a state natural area which is a no no. Apart from that they are more than happy to see me plant caches as it brings more people into the state park. I have also had emails from the DNR asking me for feedback on the parks that I take my students to on various field trips I run so its nice to know that they are looking to take on board any suggestions for improvements as well.

To clarify, it is not necessary to wait for a reply. Assuming they have an issue, they will contact you and ask you to make changes.

It is submitted, you waited “X” amount of time with no denial….place the cache!! They received the notification so you did your part!!!
