Can we love a place too much?
When we went out to our cache “Trillium Trail” last month, we found what we thought was garlic mustard right along the trail. We checked with the DNR, and with their permission and instruction, we cleaned up quite a bit of the invasive plant just at the seed pods were starting to form. We couldn’t get it all, especially the little ones in the midst of the poison ivy.
We were chagrined to think that by us highlighting this favorite spot of our and bringing more people into the area to see it, we may have threatened the very thing that was special about the place, the trillium flowers. After researching the cycle of garlic mustard, though, we think the seeds were brought into the area pre-geocache, but we will be posting a notice on the cache page to take care before and after visiting the trail. We had even considered disabling the cache, but since other outdoors enthusiasts use the spot, it wouldn’t necessarily help to keep just cachers out.
Have you found that some spots maybe shouldn’t have caches in them because they may be “loved to death”?
I really loved my Alien Invasion Multi GCN8NH at Lapham Peak…it was my favorite. After I placed it in that location two letterboxes showed up within 25 feet of the cache and as a result the area was taking a real beating. I archived the listing due to what I felt was excessive wear on the area (volunteer trail and other seeking related damage)….I had no control over the other listings so I chose to archive my favorite cache…Sure I could have moved it but it would not be the same…
