How many times have you found a cache on accident? I’m just been wondering if it happens alot or not? I’ve found a total of 2 caches on accident.

I did once and it was 2 or 3 years before I started to cache. I was walking in the woods ( I don’t recall where) and I found an ammo box in a fallen tree lightly covered by bark. I looked at it but didn’t touch it. I guess I was apprehensive for some reason. I just thought it was strange. Of course years later I got the “Ahhhhhhhh…that’s what that was about,” moment.

I found an unpublished cache near high cliff state park while hiding temp caches. It’s still not published yet…

I don’t recall finding any caches on accident. However, my next door neighbor found two stages of a three stage multi on accident, and the wife of a guy at work found one at a resort while they were on vacation on accident. I found a letterbox on accident once.

Oh yeah now that you mentioned it I did find a letterbox as well, on the Wiowash Trail

    One geocache and 4 letterboxes.

I guess geocachers hide their stuff better…

I think I’ve found 5 letterboxes accidentally. No geocaches that I recall.

    one letterbox.

Hollow stump right next to the trail. I thought that wold be a great place for a geocache and found the letterbox when I looked in. Signed the log and hid it a little better.

Few days later I tried to look it up on the letterboxing site and coldn’t find it.

      We’ve discovered 4 by accident.
My father found one about 4 years ago, while doing volunteer work in a Dodge County Park. It is still active.
We have found them while looking for hide spots. Because of the .1 mile proximity rule, we have found WPs or Finals for puzzle caches, since their actual coordinates aren’t posted.
And you better believe we post the ‘Found It’ log! 😉

A lot of the time when you cannot find them online they are mystery letterboxes…3 of the 4 I found were mystery letterboxes (Wizard of Oz Series).

…and like you I looked in those places cuz they would be a good spot for a geocache to be placed.

The one I found was actually part of a series of state themed letterboxes. Found several of the other states on the site but not the one I found.

I’ve found several Ranger Boy stages of multi’s. Found a few caches by accident while searching for hiding spots. At least a half dozen letterboxes, some as close as 5′ to geocaches.

I’m working on a personal challenge right now somewhat related to this subject. How often do you drive past a cemetery or dead end and say there must be a cache there. I’ve found a dead end and a cemetery cache just by stopping without knowing if there really is one there. I’m still working on findind a park and ride this way.

Oh I forgot about the one by your cache…make that 5 letterboxes I found by accident…not counting the two that moved to within 15 feet of one of my caches (which I archived due in part to that reason).

My favorite accidental find was a letterbox at GC10E7E. I believe the cache owner was using the letterbox as camo, as they were touching, with the letterbox in front of the geocache!
