I was hoping to compile a list of the best stores/websites to obtain containers, camo tape, swag, etc. I’d rather spend my day searching for caches than match containers. These are a few that I have used in my neophyte caching life thus far.
35mm containers:
I asked at the local Walgreen’s photo dep. and she gave me a bag they had been saving. Not all Walgreen’s do this, but I got many on my first try.Waterproof Matchsticks containers:
I found some at farm-n-fleet, but I have seen better. The ones at FnF were metal with a semi-complicated unscrewing mechanism, looking for the plastic orange containers.Camo tape:
The Farm n Fleet stuff is no good.Ammo Containers:
Local army surplus in Kenosha has many of these for under 10$Swag:
Racine area ~ Nelson’s Variety Store, dollar stores, clearance at sporting goods stores & Walgreen’s.Lock n’ Lock?
Adventure Paper?Misc Container supplies (magnets, camo, glue, weather-proof spray):
Hobby LobbyThanks, sorry if this has been posted before, I checked back a bit and only found the camo tape thread. 🙂
06/17/2009 at 4:47 pm #1909786Any local film developer can provide you with film canisters. The only problem being that they make horrible cache containers. I have a bag of about 50 of them from 2 years ago, and have only used one to make a NEMESIS cache.
Waterproof matchstick containers are much better suited for caches. They sell the kind you are looking for at WalMart and every sporting goods store I’ve been in.
I buy all my cammo tape from WalMart. Just get the good stuff, Duck brand, not the cheaper brand that turns blue.
I find ammo containers at Gander mountain when they have them. Usually about $6-$7 a piece.
I get my Rite-in-the-rain paper from the bookstore inside Gateway Tech. Wife works there, and we both go to school there so it’s convenient.

Unless the local cachers beat you to the chase and buy out the whole stock!
06/17/2009 at 7:07 pm #1909789There’s always another wally world…. lol
It’s funny that you say that because I almost always glance at those and the keyholders in the auto dept as to whether they are in stock or out of stock. There’s usually no middle ground when it comes to these 2 items… Strange.
06/17/2009 at 8:20 pm #1909790Thanks, I hit wally world and bought the last remaining matchstick containers. I’ve generally seen the film containers inside another container. I think that works better.
I did not find the camo tape at walmart although they said it will be in in a few weeks.
As for the rite as rain! I will be at Gateway to get that right away! Thanks for that tidbit of info!06/17/2009 at 9:38 pm #1909791I’ve generally seen the film containers inside another container. I think that works better.
I have to agree with this 100% I actually prefer (as a finder) a film canister with a micro log roll inside a regular/small sized container over the log “books”. Many of these log “books” are in baggies that don’t zip lock, are falling apart anyway (pages falling out), are wet clumps of mold, etc. Make sure you label the 35mm container as the log so that it is not taken from the cache and so those not familiar can find it.
This is a much better use for them then as a container. Your odds vary on whether a 35mm stays dry. Some I’ve seen dry long after they are placed and others are instantly wet and never get better.
06/17/2009 at 9:44 pm #1909792Ammo cans in Army surplus section of Fleet-Farm (not the same as Farm and Fleet).
Lock-and-lock: Found them in housewares containers section at WalMart (don’t know if they’re official ones, but that’s what they say and that’s what they look like). Spray paint them with the Krylon fusion paint for plastic (also at WM).
Oh, and ditto on the orange waterproof match holders at WM.
06/17/2009 at 9:56 pm #1909793Not to sound like a walmart commercial but they also have small zip-lock baggies in their craft dept that can be used to store a micro log sheet folded or rolled.
Ditto on the Fleet farm ammo cans. Best to catch them on-sale though as they periodically put them on sale for almost half-off or more.
The dealer that I’ve bought many magnetic nano containers from on the cheap seems to have gone under 🙁 I would never pay 5 dollars a piece or more for these…
06/17/2009 at 10:15 pm #1909794I just seen a few of theese store pop up recently, in Cunberland and Barron, but I picked up a handful of small Lock & Lock type containers at Doller General for $2 and I have found some good Camo tape at the Goodwill store in Rice Lake. I would think that they all would have it but I could be wrong on that.
06/18/2009 at 6:23 pm #1909795Unfortunately the cheap camo tape (available most places) becomes rather obvious after a winter. The expensive camo tape (especially the textured types) are better, but costly. In my opinion, the best answer is camo PAINT. You need this anyway to cover up the Ammunition markings on the ammo cans, so you can also use this for tupperware, and match containers. Note that film cans and keyholder are not good containers and generally only work when contained and sheltered from weather.
