Not sure how I can begin this post. But I have reason to believe that a cacher who may be not local to me has “armchair logged” 3 caches in my area, meaning he logged 3 caches that he did not actually visit.

Here are the log entries. All of them logged on 11/27/2008

    Cache 1 – http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LUID=7bb7f3a8-fb71-4218-95b7-04e1d0fbfe21

    Cache 2 – http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LUID=8c7e057d-c0fb-4ddd-8ab3-c37095c8bc68

    Cache 3 – http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LUID=69941a58-adce-4658-a867-765e80a7192b

The unusual part is – according to his profile, he did not become a member until 3/18/2009, but the “finds” were all logged for 11/27/08. Now I’ve heard of cachers logging finds before they get a GC.com membership, but those are usually cases of them previously caching with a team or family before getting their own account and back-logging their finds.

But this case is unique. For one thing, I just got the e-mail notifications yesterday of those three finds even though he supposedly found them last November.

Another unique thing is – in each of those three logs, he basically said that he found it but did not sign the log.

    This has me perplexed.

What do you guys make of this?

Well, you can become a practicing anal-retentive, or you can ignore them.

Me, I would ignore them. No skin off my back.

I’d say he’s armchairing them. Look at this one.

    Greetings from Geocaching.com.
I am a volunteer reviewer for geocaches in your area. I noticed that this cache has been temporarily disabled for a period of time well in excess of the period of “a few weeks” as contemplated by the cache guidelines published on Geocaching.com. While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other caches from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can’t do so forever. Please either repair/replace this cache, or archive it (using the archive listing link in the upper right) so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. If you need more time to repair this cache, please post a note to the cache page indicating when you feel you will be able to complete you maintenance obligations, so that other members will be able to guage when the cache will again become available.
If you plan on repairing this cache, please log a note to the cache (not email) so I don’t archive the listing for non-communication.

    I am sad to say
    this cache has gone away.
    I am quite certain
the monster that lurks behind the wooded curtain
    has snatched this cache
    for his own stash.
    Don’t worry,
this slip will be up and running in a hurry

It’s your cache. you can delete the logs if you want. I had a couple of guys last year say they found my cache, I asked them if they were sure, they said yes, I asked them if there was a lookout tower, they said yes, I said then you didn’t find my cache cuz there IS NOT a lookout tower at the location!

Profile photo looks like a couple of kids?

Could be a new user ID and they’re taking a guess as to when they found caches with mom and dad.

Ask Jim & Linda, they have lots of finds on their caches.

I recently set up a new user ID for our daughter and at some point in time she may want to go back and log caches that she remembers, and she didn’t actually sign the log. I’d hate to have to justify a bunch of them.

Point being, it’s just a few blips in the geocaching.com database, so why sweat it?

But, I’ve been told here before by an admin that it’s my responsibility to police my logs, so…

Made me giggle though….I’d ignore it, I need the laughs.

That is quite possible. When my son opened his own account, he went and claimed a bunch of caches that we had found together. I asked a fellow cacher for advice on this and she said something to the effect of, “I just opened my own caching account and am claiming this cache as a find because I found it with my dad under his account”, when you log it. I even had him state or email, I forget which, that if the owner would rather not allow this, that he would delete his log.

Guess I’d cut them a break. only three were “logged” in November. the rest look to be after their membership date. Maybe just a mistake and didn’t know how to edit?

I deleted one of two EarthCaches a cacher logged a couple of days ago…it was clear by the photos that he was in the park, but he didn’t answer any of the questions on one of the caches and had all incorrect answers (which were posted on a sign) for the other listing. I allowed one log as I could see he was in the park…but I disallowed the other as just being in the same park doesn’t qualify as a find….its really up to you….but in general deleting folks finds tends to irk them….

In the logs for cache #3, wis backpacker mentions having his brother-in-law along to geocache. wis backpacker also appears in another log (#1) but not in #2. It looks like a new cacher that is trying to back track the first finds when introduced to the sport. They probably wanted to be accountable on why they didn’t sign the log, even though they found it with wis backpacker. They may have mistakenly “guessed” wrong on one of the finds.
I have cached with my nephew and I don’t let him sign logs because he doesn’t have an account. I told him that when he does get an account, he can return to these caches to sign them and teach someone new about the hunt!

You could e-mail wis backpacker for more info (in my opinion). I personally don’t think it’s “armchair caching”, because of the low number of logged finds. Love a mystery! 😕

None of those caches are mine. I just have notifications of all local caches (finds, DNF’s, disable. re-enable, new publishes) and those three e-mails came in.

Looking back at his other finds though, I realize he may be a family member or friend of another cacher that he went caching with before he got his own account and may have just backlogged his finds.

Edit to Jim & Linda – yeah, Wis Backpacker is the person I am referring to, but didn’t want to bring up his name as he is local to me.

Sorry to say this happens sometimes, sometimes it is innocent but other times it is not. I had one where somebody described the cache retrieval in the appropriate fashion for one of my nanos, only problems were the cache was disabled (as the container went missing), he had no finds within 300 miles of my cache (not that good to drive that distance). So I played along and emailed him, he told me he had found the replacement and I must have forgotten to activate the cache. I deleted him right then, the replacement cache was sticking to the front of my refrigerator waiting to be replaced

But maybe he found it while raiding your refrigerator! 😯

After reading their logs and looking at their profile picture. I think is was the kids caching with mom and dad. They now have their own account.
If it was my caches logged, I would ignore them. Remember that this is only a game. So have fun with it. Life is to short to take this so seriously.

Today I started planning my route to and fro for the planned march to the “Eagle Source”. I figure if time allows, I could collect a couple of counties and DeLorme pages along the way. While looking at a page for a virtual, I noticed that there were two finds a day or two apart. Both finders are from Germany. After looking at the profile for one of them, and looking at their stats and finds, it turns out that they have cached in numerous states, from the midwest to the southwest. Unless I missed something, all of their 88 finds in this country, are virtuals. How odd I thought. So I looked at all of their traditional finds and found them to be almost 100% in Germany and France. I also noticed that they cached in quite a few foreign countries. Imagine, such world travelers and only finding virtuals? After seeing their finds in the US of virtuals, and where they found their traditionals, I quit looking any further. I was just too pi__ed off. Talk about arm chairing it.

This is exactly what Jacob did when he got his own account. Instead of claiming all those 1000s of finds with the family – he only claimed finds on the caches he went and found or revisited and signed his name into. No backlogging for him! When I asked if he wanted to claim all the caches he found before getting his account, he told me, “I didn’t find all those caches as Duck505, I found them as AstroD”. Gotta love the words of wisdom from a kid!
