Hi All,
We have booked Group Site 1 for the 6th Annual Rock Island Getaway Weekend. It will once again fall on Fathers Day Weekend and runs from Thursday June 17th through Sunday June 20th, 2010. The larger site means plenty of room for more cachers and hopefully, NO BOYSCOUT TROOPS TRYING TO STEAL OUR DOCK SPACE!
Official sign-up will not occur until we are able to create the GC page next spring.
However, please use this topic to post any questions, comments or definite YES I WILL BE THERE commitments.
07/20/2009 at 12:02 am #1910946Yep, I will be there. Won’t miss this event!
08/15/2009 at 11:23 am #1910947What could be better than being at the BEST event in the state?
But having Group Site I doesn’t really prevent the Boy Scouts from attempting their shenanigans again, does it? We would need to reserve BOTH group sites for that!

We are actually thinking of getting the Karfi reserved just for us on Sunday (It’s a small additional fee). We can haul our gear to the dock five minutes before the ferry arrives (at the time we designate), and still p*ss off the boy scouts as we load up and they sit there wondering WTH???
02/21/2010 at 1:26 am #1910949The cache page for Rock Island Getaway VI has just been submitted. Will post the link to it as soon as it is published.
02/21/2010 at 5:26 pm #1910950That means I should probably publish it, eh?

That and post your “Will Attend” log 😉
02/22/2010 at 4:10 am #1910952Maybe a dumb question, but do you get ferried out to the island or do you have to make your own way there?
02/22/2010 at 12:52 pm #1910953There are two ferry rides – one to Washington and one to Rock. 🙂 Fees do apply.

Rock Island: http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/parks/specific/rockisland/ferry.html
02/25/2010 at 5:09 am #1910954The listing is published so now you can check it out. We hope to see some new faces join us this year for this fun event.

03/26/2010 at 4:57 pm #1910955I am SOOOO hoping I can FINALLY make it this year.
Thanks for keeping this event going to keep giving me hope to make one sooner or later.
04/01/2010 at 1:07 am #1910956I logged that I will attend.
It will be my first geocaching event unless of course I attend another event between now and then. I’ve never even been to Door County before so I’m pretty excited about being able to use this opportunity to go.I’d be bringing only myself, and of course whatever else I can drag or carry to the island, I assume.
I’ve never camped at a group site before so I’m a little unsure of the “accomidations”. In how close proximity will everyone be camping from each other?
One thing I’m worrying about, is how much do I need to bring.
Of course I plan on bringing my own tent and cooler for food & drinks, but should I worry about bringing along the other camping essentials such as a camp stove or might only a few people bring camp stoves to share?
I worry that if I have too much stuff I might not be able to carry it on to the island all in one trip.04/01/2010 at 2:49 am #1910957@helidood wrote:

I worry that if I have too much stuff I might not be able to carry it on to the island all in one trip.As for accomodations, it depends on how many are staying at the group site. If could be tent upon tent or there could be a bit of space to spread out. FYI, the walknig trail does go right through this camp site, so don’t be freaked if oyu see people walking by. Group site 1 is the biggest site and closest to the dock. We also set up a large tarp near the fire in case of bad weather for people to prepare food without getting wet (or sunburned). So tents will most likely be put around the perimeter of the camp site.
As far as equipment, most people bring all their own. I know we use our jetboil and the campfire for most of our cooking. And what one forgets, someone usually has, to help out. Independence is the best way to plan unless you make arangements with other campers beforehand to split/share stuff.
Take all your stuff in one trip?? We’ve been doing this for 4 or 5 years and we still haven’t gotten all our gear to the site in one trip! But there are plenty of hands and carts to help haul everyone’s stuff.
Just keep in mind this is camping at its most primitive and everything you may need, needs to be brought to the island. There are no stores or trading posts here. But that’s what makes it fun!

But you still only make one (round) trip between Washington and Rock Island, correct? That’s the part I’m most worried about.
What you mean by “trip” is the walk between the point the boat drops you off and the camp site, correct?
And there are carts– thats a good thing. What about carts for people to use to haul things from their vehicle to the boat?Would this be a good place to bring a kayak to go paddling around the island?

Sorry, for not be clearer. It was late. Yes, only one trip between Washington and Rock (the ferry hauls a lot, just be there early with your gear!)
Carts are available as long as someone in your group brings one. Neither of the islands provide any. (We willl have ours – good for up to 1500 lbs at a time). As far a hauling from the vehicle to the boat – the parking lot is at the boat dock. So no long walks hauling stuff. That’s reserved for Rock Island. 🙂
I can’t comment on the water, I avoid it like the plague, but I know experienced kayakers do like to make laps around the island and out to surrounding ones. Just be sure you know the water and your skills!! I heard the water and currents are vastly different up there.
