Those of you who have bought a refurbished GPS of any sort (auto, handheld, marine, etc), how have your experiences went with the refurbished device in comparison if you’d bought the same device new?
I’m looking at some inexpensive road GPS to complement my handheld. I already have decided on some models and now am deciding to go new or refurbished.
I’ve seen the Nuvi 200 go for about $108 new and about $70-90 refurbished. I have my eye on a TomTom 130 go for about $59 refurbished with a rebate and about $129 new. Bartrod also gave me some leads on refurbished GPS’es on various sites such as New Egg or Tiger Direct.
The problem with buying refurbished is that the free map update with registration is usually not available with a refurbished device whereas just about every new device has one free map update with registration of a new device.
Also, there is also a limited warranty on most refurbished devices and if I wanted to buy an extended warranty on a refurbished device, I might as well just buy it new since the typical warranty on a new device is much longer than a refurbished one.
Thoughts? Opinions?
when I purchased my refurb Nuvi200 it already had the newest map loaded and I think they did give some warranty time on it. I never really gave an extended warranty a thought as for what the extended warranty would cost it wouldn’t be worth the extra money as I personally feel that any electronics purchased for under say $130 are pretty much disposable.
The thing I do like about refurbs is that it had a problem and that problem has been fixed unlike the new unit that ends up with a problem that now you have to figure out how to send it in, wait for the repair and for the manufacturer to send it back. Do you sometimes get burned? yeah, certainly but the less money I shell out initially, the less irritated I am when things go wrong.Disclaimer : Always answering to a higher power.
Makes sense, Rat. Maybe I’ll go the refurbished route after all. Now it’s just a matter of deciding on the merchant and the device as well as making sure said device is compatible with GSAK.
