I’m going to try to build some as they are pretty fun to do. I spent 6 hours the other day poking around on the builder…but everyone I have spoken to (who has created one…) says it takes more like 40 hours to get a grip (albiet loose grip) on the program and create a simple listing.
Keep riding me though or I’ll chicken out on this……it’s really hard.
10/01/2009 at 5:23 pm #1914710can you do the where i go’s with a netbook? I dont have a pocket pc and my gps doesnt support them, they look cool but I think equipment lacking is going to be my problem in doing them.

I’m not sure but there is a growing population of Garmin Oregons and Colorados out there…enough for me to spend the time to get a listing or two published. Folks can always meet up with a team who has the right equipment to do the listings.
10/01/2009 at 5:59 pm #1914712are you building just a wherigo, or are you doing the cache hybrid thingy?
10/01/2009 at 6:07 pm #1914713Having gone thru the demo on the Oregon (well, trying to go thru the demo, never finished it), I think this is something the kids would take to, but I have no interest or inclination in programming one.

It would be the hybrid with a (well stocked) Full size at the end.

I hear ya…this is tough but that’s what I thought when I went back to school for computers….oh wait that was tough too (I dropped out shortly after all the kids in my class were about 4 years ahead of me in database building and other “basic” skills).

sounds awesome to me, good luck
10/01/2009 at 11:04 pm #1914716I would love to create one and make use of my storytelling skills in the process, but I took at a look at what’s required and it’s WAY beyond my capabilities. As for finding them, we have to depend on the kindness of friends, as we don’t have the “right stuff” to load the cartridges.

OK I have one created.
I tested it and it does work on my unit over in the park…but it does not work like it does in my head so back to the keyboard to get it right…it’s close though.10/07/2009 at 10:44 pm #1914718I really like the idea of this new type of cache & would really like to try doing one. I have to wonder if these will really catch on that much considering you need either a Garmin Oregon or Colorado Series GPS, no other brand/model that I know of can do whereigo.
Garmin just released the Dakota Series(smaller version of Oregon) & it doesn’t have any Wherigo Features. Either they excluded this in a somewhat cheaper model or they may be phasing this out.

I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if it was being phased out. It’s been forever since GC has made any updates to the creation software; actually since:
Wherigo Builder (Alpha)
Wherigo Builder for Windows
Version: 2.0.5129.5086
Last Update: 5/29/2008Alpha still? Really? No updates to the horrible build software in 17 months? Now does this look like something the Powers over at GC really want to keep going with? I would think these will find themselves as a grandfathered cache type.
10/09/2009 at 12:16 am #1914720I suspect they were underwhelmed by the number of tourism boards and chambers of commerce setting up Wherigos to show off their communities, etc. This was supposed to be a commercial program for Groundspeak and Garmin, but I think the limited market penetration of the hardware has put it on the back burner.
To be honest, I think most of their development work these days is focused on the Iphone and other smartphone platforms. Don’t hold your breath waiting for an upgrade.
10/11/2009 at 8:41 pm #1914721After completing a couple of wherigos, I was very interested in making one myself. I couldn’t begin to count the hours I have in making Zoo Confustion (GC1Y4PC). I only had access to my Garmin Colorado until my recent purchase of a GPS for my Dell Axim PPC. I’m now working on another one that will (hopefully) utilize the PPC’s sound capabilities.
At this point wherigos are a novelty, but I’m intrigued by the potential.Lions Fan
10/11/2009 at 9:20 pm #1914722Now I have two working versions of my listing…but neither work the way I want them to….UG! Gee I wonder why these are so few and far between?
