Several weeks ago we filed a DNF, and received points for the DNF. A week or so later, we were fortunate enough to find the DNF’d cache, and filed a ‘FOUND”, expecting to get the previously awarded DNF points deducted, so we were not ‘double dipping’…or something like that.

We ended up getting credit for both the DNF and the FOUND. Cool! But didn’t seem right, and no whining, right?

But there was doubt: We likely should have placed a note in our FOUND submission noting we already had a DNF on that cache, thus alerting the LCG reviewer to take action as appropriate. Since we did not do that, it could have slipped through without being noticed; everybody is busy. Or maybe ‘double dipping’ is A-OK?

We cannot find any rule addressing this, but maybe it’s like looking for a cache that is at the tip of your nose. However, we did see a comment in a cache log where a finder stated they’d be submitting the find for LCG points, and have the DNF points removed.

Back to our case: We sent a note to a WGA rep., alerting them to our situation and asking they delete/deal with as appropriate. They passed the note onto the correct LCG person, and our DNF points were removed. Seems fair. But not spelled out in the rules.

Oh yeah, is there a question here? Yes there is:

How should a DNF + a subsequent FOUND be scored?

Thanks in advance for your comments!

you get the points for both submissions!

simple system we have here 🙂

I think I dnf’ed twice then found it. Got much ribbing for that.

There’s a reason they’re lonely and We’re all adults here (well most of us)

If you want to cheat on a game within a game then you should revisit (no pun intended) your therapist this week and address those issues.

If your therapist signs the proper paperwork it’s worth 20 points. However submitting false paperwork for the therapy bonus points will result in lifetime banishment.

So, Innocent persistence is fine 😀

But, if need or with a Therapist…OK to game the game:
        Find it,
        but not,
        then double-find it,
        for double got.
        🙄

        Got it! Thanks!

There is that loophole. And last year a few players were eyed with some cynicism for double-dipping when in all likelihood, the points and multiple searches were legit. I had been the target of some suspicion in the past and while playing by the rules, certainly sandbagged points a few times near month’s end to keep other players in the dark.

The nice thing about pulling back on the competition is that I no longer feel the desire to score every possible point. I have actually made a point this year to not log any DNF’s and log REVISITS only when I think I might have had something to do with that cache going missing. Because of this, no one doubts the legitimacy of my score and that is a nice change from the first year I played.

It is just a game within the game but, like many other aspects of the sport, these incidentals can and do get blown out of proportion. My recommendation is to play any way you feel comfortable with. I would say it isn’t worth the reviewer’s time to modify (remove) every DNF report when a subsequent FOUND report is submitted, so just go with it like the rest of us and have fun!

We only played intensely the last 2 monthes last year, and had a couple DNFs with subsequent finds. If you searched for it (legitimately) 3 times, and found it the 3rd time, you should get points for trying (legitimately) to find it.
Driving to a posted parking area, and seeing that the cache is 1 mile away, and leaving, is NOT a DNF! It is a DNA…Did Not Attempt! No points!
If I see that a cacher found one that we DNF’d, it let’s us know that the cache is in play, and findable. The DNF’s let the owner know there may be a problem, and why it’s lonely.

Bottom line…take the double (or triple) dip, as legitimately as possible!
