My feeling is that the DNR doesn’t want the public to panic in any way, there by losing dollars. Panic might be too strong of word.

For years the Michigan DNR denied having cougars in their state, but finally came out about 2-3 years ago and admitted having some there.

I don’t know if this is a cougar or not…but a friend who lives 20 miles from Stephenson MI sent these to me. They were taken not too long ago…

If they are there, there are certainly here.

Kind of looks like Colorado to me.

I saw one in Biron (near Wisconsin Rapids) when I was about 16 or 17 years old.
It was crossing the road about 40 yards in front of me. It was close to Sandlander’s GC21DK5 cache, but on the main road (So Biron Drive), and before the railroad tracks.

I had been riding home after dark from a friend’s house on my bike when
I saw it come out of the woods, crossing the street. As it made it to the center of the road, it slowed down, almost stopping. It seemed to have caught a glimpse of me approaching on a bike and with what looked like a single leap, it was on the other side of the road and running into the woods.

I only saw it in silhouette because it was between me and a street light, so to me it appeared all black. I know that would make it a Jaguar, but IMO a Jaguar in Wisconsin would be VERY unlikely. I don’t believe it was anything other than a Mtn Lion. Sure didn’t look or walk like a dog, and it was WAY TOO BIG to be a domestic cat.

Everytime I go through that area on foot or whatever, I cant help but think about that big cat that might (still) be lurking in the woods thats going to make a meal of me.
