I’ll be in Marshfield next week. Can anyone recommend a dozen or so caches that could be considered winter friendly?
These are all I’ve done down there:
GC1GF34 and GCM945 are both easy terrain but it looks like they have been muggled possibly, lots of dnf’s.
GC1PDK1 – Might actually be better now that its frozen, was wet and muddy when we went for the ftf on it earlier this year.
GC1EMN4 – Was found on the 29th, short trek from the road thats probably fairly deep snow but could be done.
GC9280 – Virtual, easy to get requirements but I think the lot is not plowed in the winter so you may have to walk in a little bit.
Other wise do a quick search (pocket query if you are premium member and use gsak) and look for stuff that has been found in the last week or so.
Agree with Splash. I have done most of the Marshfield caches, and even own one there. Sadly, there are not many winter friendly caches in Marshfield to suggest, as many are ground hides.

I think I may look for those ‘recently found’ ones. or more or less just play it by ear, I guess.I’m still not a premium member, don’t know when that’ll be. (money is really tight being an old college student)
But all these “Pocket Queries” I keep hearing about… Those are just for PDA’s or iPhones or something?
I don’t own anything like that. Closest thing I have is a 10″ netbook.
Even my GPS is just an old Etrex Legend. I don’t even have a cable to download waypoints. I handwrite all my coordinates on a separate sheet of paper. It’s time consuming, but it gets the job done (slowly)@helidood wrote:

We found over 1500 that way before we had the capability to go paperless. It works just fine!
Etrex Legends are the only units we’ve owned. We have found over 200 and hid over 150 with them. We rarely hunt more than 12-15 in one day so haven’t given much thought to going paperless. We do download coordinates though into both the Etezes and our Nuvi.

(slowly)A PQ is something you can run as a premium member that emails you a file in gpx (or loc) format. You can use this in gsak (which you should take a gander at too gsak.net I think it still runs free(?) or you can purchase it for cheap, great tool) to organize and manage caches. You can also use the GPX file in many other applications such as waypoint downloaders for gps’s. I used to do it with a serial cable on my legend years ago.
gpx and loc are “standard” gps file formats, google the terms, you’ll get a better answer than I’m able to write.

Pocket Query (PQ)
A Premium Member feature, a Pocket Query is custom geocache search that you can have emailed to you on a daily or weekly basis. Pocket Queries give you the ability to filter your searches so you only receive information on the caches you want to search for in either a GPX of LOC format. This feature lets you download up to 500 caches at one time.
