Please use this Forum thread to post your design ideas for the 2010 WGA Geocoin design contest. This thread is for design ideas to be shared and to allow others to help you finalize or “tweak” your designs by giving constructive feedback.

Please remember that designs submitted for the contest are submitted under a single person for the contest. You can collaborate with others to help you with your design, but it should be your design.

Once you have fully developed your coin design, you must submit your design via email per the details in the contest announcement.

I’ll start it out. This is a simple design for just the front that I’m not entirely happy with.

The logo, outline for the compass and lettering would be raised metal. Feel free to comment and make suggestions for the reverse side.

Hey, Cheezehead! The “WGA” is north of Highway 64 on this one!

OK. Obviously, 2010 is needed somewhere on the coin, front or back.

With the coin in the shape of Wisconsin, will Door County be somehow attached without the sharp point (any chance of breakage)? Right now, it looks like DC could be used to extract logs from nanos.

GC colors or others?

Can we see what previous WGA coins looked like? I’ve only been around for the cow.

FYI – The whitetail deer WGA coin design was 2005. (pictured is the standard edition, the LE has two tone metal finish)

There was also a 2006 Lighthouse coin I believe.

Here is another concept that I like a lot more than the other.

For the front, the base metal background is a relief of Wisconsin’s terrain. The county lines are raised and the counties are translucent enamel. In other words, the face of the coin would be flat and the “texture” would be seen through the color. There are four colors for the counties. The compass colors could probably be changed to use those colors to save a little $.

The back shows outdoor activities available in the state. I haven’t done a color count, but I’m sure it could be reduced and still look good.

I like some of the concepts, but I don’t like the coins in the shape of Wisconsin. If our state was shaped like Colorado I’d be OK with it.
I’d prefer a round or square coin with the state superimposed on the front and/or back.

With elaborate designs on both the front & back, I can see some geography challenged cachers (I believe they may exist) mistaking the front for the back and vise versa.

In my travels all around the country, you wouldn’t believe how many people I’ve met that have absolutely no idea where Wisconsin even is! Most of them say something like, “Thats like next to Canada, ain’t it?”

A real life cow is a 3-Dimensional object that can be viewed from any angle, even underneath or behind if you’re brave enough.

Wisconsin, as we recognize it, is a 2-Dimensional shape viewed on a map.
Seeing the shape of Wisconsin reversed 180 degrees makes my head hurt.

Interesting take on it.

I guess I would have to say that the decision was made by the board for a state shaped coin, in part because of member requests, in part because they will likely sell well, and in part because we have not done that yet.

Anyway, the decision to have it shaped like the state is a done deal at this point, and I look forward to the way that designers work within this limitation.
