I wish to express my personal apologies to anyone who searched for S|S caches while participating in a puzzle tour or being directly affected by my actions to abate them. It was not up to the standards that I have set for myself in this sport and my interest in making puzzle solves worth the effort. Not only that, but to do so by perpetrating an alias and pretending it wasn’t me, was beyond the pale and anyone caught in the crossfire has my sincerest apology.
I will continue to express my disappointment with this manner of caching, but will no longer use these public forums to do so. All of you deserve better of me, especially those who side with me on the issue and feel like you were taken advantage of. Know that my actions represent the degree of passion I put into this sport and the value I seek to add, and maintain, to the experience beyond the rudimentary elements of finding a container with a GPS.
All S|S caches will be up and running again soon after I find the time to determine which ones I wish to adopt out, in the meantime, feel free to log any disabled caches, provided you can find them…

Thanks a lot Alex.
Alex, you have done much to improve the game that we all enjoy, and are very much appreciated as someone who has raised the bar as to what a cache can be. Few have been as innovative as you in their approach to cache development, and few have been as creative as you in designing challenging puzzles.
Personally, I feel even greater respect for you as a person in your ability to fess up to a small mistake. It seems to me, that mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them and work towards correcting them.
In the great balance of things, when you put all the great things you have added to the game, and all the people you have mentored along the way, and weigh those positive achievements against a single uncharecteristic error in judgement, then we find a scale tipped towards ignoring and forgetting the single error. I guess we all know, that we all mess up from time to time, and to be human means to err.
I also appreciate your strength of charecter. I believe that our ethics and the way we play any game is revealed by our character. Character is not made when problems arise, but it is exhibited when confronted by hard choices.
Thanks Alex.

…accepted as well though I totally understand the reason for the loss of cool….though I think you did a fairly good job of staying level-headed all things considered. It is clear from the responses to the past threads that there are a few different camps out there…some who want the find (damn the cost), those who want the whole experience and those who fall in between. None of these groups are bad or good, only different.
Our job as hiders and seekers is to try and find the balance and to allow for others to find theirs.
Many folks love your hides and the challenge they present; hide for those folks…try to ignore the rest or try to accept them for how they choose to play and enjoy their game….just know however they find your cache they are having fun.
…just sayin’

I couldn’t have said it any better myself….
04/03/2010 at 2:41 am #1926356Oh the things you miss during a hiatus! 😉 Probably my favorite cache find was Alex’s Book of Armaments II: 9-21 that I saved for my 2000th find.
These are the unexpected prizes that I do enjoy a lot when I come across them.
Thank you Alex, Cheeto, gottarun, Dave, and anyone else who I may have missed who have put so much thought into their caches. I hope that everyone can find a peace of mind. I find if I take 6 or 7 months off, I can come back and enjoy the search for caches like I once used to.
I hope the “Good feeling” comes back after stepping back and focusing on finding caches for a bit. Again, thank you all. 😀

Hmm – an apology from the aggrieved party? That was not something I was expecting.
The fact you felt a need to apologize shows you have a concern for people above your own needs and demonstrates good character. This is something I respect! However I’m not sure that you needed to apologize for anything. I do NOT feel as if your actions were that of a bratty child saying “if you can’t play in the sandbox the way I tell you, then we’re not playing at all!”
Quite the contrary… I feel your sentiments are quite justified. If you had decided to archive your caches permanently I would be quite saddened but understanding. Everyone who geocaches would have lost something that day. Some people don’t understand what it means to be in charge of a couple hundred caches, don’t understand what kind of effort goes into creating an elaborate thought out puzzle cache… and unless they were in your shoes – would not understand how it feels to see all that hard work casually dismissed. So I think you were justified in feeling like “why should I even bother anymore”.
In light of your announcement to reinstate the majority of your caches – I am thrilled to no end!! See the wonderful thing is, there are far more people (I feel) who DO honestly and genuinely appreciate what you and other CO’s do for the game.
But I urge you please do not beat your self up and feel as if you were wrong to feel how you felt.
As for using this public forum to vent and let your feelings be known? What is wrong with that? Personally I think these forums were the perfect place to discuss things. The conversations here have been civil and intelligent. You brought an issue to the table that affects Geocachers, in a forum for Geocachers. Again I see no harm in that. I prefer to get things out in to the open… let the facts be known… I despise closed doors affairs… had you not said anything here – I wouldn’t have had any idea what was going on! It has also allowed everyone who does care, an opportunity to state so! It has shown that there are far more good people in our sport, than trouble makers. Something I am proud of!
I have a busy weekend ahead of me, which will unfortunately not have time for any geocaching (at least I don’t think I’ll have time). But I will be watching closely to see how things progress 🙂 Perhaps I’ll try to make another attempt at the Doctor Visits cache… my arch nemesis which I WILL find some day heh…

04/03/2010 at 3:51 pm #1926358Alex, Thanks for being forthright about that little moment of judgement with your buddy Deep Throwit (loved that name!). We all have our things that can send us over the edge, and as Ralph already stated far better than I could, what you’ve done to advance the game far outweighs anything.
Trekkin’ and I have learned that there are many personalities in the game, and most of us have our own weird little quirks. We accept everyone with their quirks and don’t discriminate based on any of them. We enjoy caching with all you quirky folks! [;)] We do have our personal philospophy of play, which includes (Birdin’) solving the puzzles we find. Trekkin’ is glad she enjoys them, as he usually can’t be bothered to tax his brain on these. I enjoy that moment of “aha” so I appreciate the puzzle placers everywhere to provide me with many hours of time learning facts and trivia about subjects as varied as waste disposal, classical music, our nation’s presidents, Dr. Who or who those people on the murals might be. I enjoy cemetery challenges and we continue to complete the ALRs for those, as they have opened our eyes to a whole new area of funerary knowledge.
These are Birdin’s opinions, shared and discussed at length with Trekkin’, and do not reflect the WGA Board. Just need to make that clear!

As for using this public forum to vent and let your feelings be known? What is wrong with that?Just a clarification for readers. I’m not “beating myself up” for the way I feel about this subject matter, nor am I apologizing for any venting of my frustrations in these forums or for defending my viewpoint, and those of others who share it, about the value of going the distance on puzzle solving. My apology was intended directly for those deserving individuals who spent time looking for caches, that weren’t there to find, as a result of my attempts to thwart recent puzzle tours. Having gone down every other avenue of appeal without success, I took the dark alley… and matters into my own hands. Insomuch as I violated the WGA forum terms of use, I take full responsibility for my actions and wholly accept any tarnishing of character that follows it, as must the other primary party in this controversy.
Everything that can be said has been said. Everything that could be laid bare has been laid bare. Now it’s time to own up, accept and move on…

Thanks for that, nothing like conjuring up memories of boot camp… some 23 years past. Wow, seems like a lifetime ago. Stranger still to think the day my own boy says “hey dad, I wanna join” and I’ll have to say “good luck kid” is potentially less than a decade away is just plain freaky!

I count myself among those fortunate to have served in the first Gulf War and wise enough to get out before the second go around with JR. I don’t wish the experience on anyone, but at least I wasn’t in direct combat. I will tell you that the first night a SCUD hit our compound and the sirens went off – well that tested my mettle, to be sure. It’s unfortunate that the side effects of the preventative drug we were taking and friendly fire incidents resulted in more overall damage than any fatality count by that wars end. This thing we’re in now… no comment. I promised to be nice in these forums 😉
