I was in Wally World tonight and walked by the solar garden lights and got to think’in about something by brother -in-law said a few weeks ago. We were setting up some of his wife’s solor lights and couple wouldn’t work. Said he have to get some new batteries. Well I saw a pack of these batteries tonight. $10 a pack. $3 for a solar light. Hmmmmm……Could this be the ultimate way to go green for geocaching???
Would these batteries work in a GPSr?
Think about it. The light come a part so all you have is the top solar/light.
When Geocaching ,have couple of these units on the dash of you car.I have a gut feeling that this may a good idea in theory, but wont work and could ruin a GPSr if tried. Am I right?
05/20/2010 at 4:20 am #1929415Perhaps you could pose this question to the members of UNGA… π
05/20/2010 at 4:24 am #1929416Do YOU have a problem with UNGA? I also belong to MnGo & MiGO. Do YOU have a problem with that also? DO YOU REALLY want me to START , MR. BOD MEMBER?????
05/20/2010 at 4:40 am #1929417This would probably work but it isn’t the best approach. The solar cell on those lights is very small and probably isn’t enough to keep you in batteries (rechargeable generally drain faster than nonrechargeables as they are lower voltage and often lower capacity). You can, however, find a solar battery charger that you can put on our dash or backpack for around $15. I suppose you dissect a bunch of lights and hookup the cells in series, but why bother? If you want to do an electrical project, just buy the cells and wire it up. Otherwise, the premade chargers aren’t all that much money, and you can use it right away.

All I have to say is WOW
UNGA was created because there is no representation by the WGA for the northern part of the state and still no OFFICIAL events happening there, there might be a WGA sponsored event there, ohhh boy we get to drive to Madison to get a grill and a banner to use, woop-d-do.
I can see more and more the WGA is a south of 45th parallel association and now a BOD slams the UNGA.
Grab the popcorn this could get good
05/20/2010 at 1:43 pm #1929420Had to ‘Google’ UNGA to find out what this secret society is…..figured it wasn’t the UN, then found the Meet/Greet/Cache/Merriment Event from last weekend. Great-looking bunch of folks! Sorry we missed it. π
What was the subject again? Oh yeah, on the use of solar in the car, we just use an inverter to steal a charge from the geomobile as we gobble fossil fuel goin’ down the highway. Guess that first we’d need a solar-powered car to get the right effect… π

Since I didn’t see this as a BOD issue, I didn’t add a disclaimer to my previous post, so I’ll add one now.
The previous post may not reflect the opinion of the WGA Board of Directors and was intended was a tounge in cheek attempt at humor.
I’ll admit that my post was a bit snarky and certainly off topic, but I didn’t intend it to be a “slam”. It saddens me that an attempt a levity can be so misconstrued as to raise anyone’s ire. I’ll refrain from any such attempts in the future.

05/20/2010 at 4:50 pm #1929424I’m not saying I have a bunch of solar lights torn apart in my hose right now or anything….

05/20/2010 at 4:56 pm #1929425Like it or not ANYTHING said by a “Person on Office” be it the President, Senator, Congressman, Governor or any other elected position, can and will be used against them if it is said negatively towards someone/something else. That’s the world of politics.
UNGA is a Facebook page. It has a T-shirt. Just like the WWGA. It’s not “organized” in any way It is meant for people to gather who play the game “Up North” Well, the Dells are “Up North” of West Bend & Madison.
So that falls under the definition of “Up North”. Madison is “Up North of Chicago” ,Duluth is “Up North” of Rice LakeUntil now UNGA was never mentioned in these forums. No need to.
I support the WGA. Hell made a stink to buy a dang T-shirt. I make a stink to get more “Up North” cachers involved in the WGA. The WGA represent Geocaching on Wisconsin. It is just MY belief. the it does not represent ALL of Wisconsin geocachers equally.05/20/2010 at 5:02 pm #1929426My next backpack…

As to events, it is true that both of our major 2010 events will be in the southern half of the state. It is also true that both of the major events in 2011 will be in the northern half of the state, and that the WGA will be be holding a CITO event in Barnes this August. Barnes is north of even you, so we do manage to get around the state as best as we can.
