This is a little hard to explain, but you’ll understand when you see it. It shows caches placed in Wisconsin progressivly from 2000 to 2010. Unfortunatly, it doesn’t include caches archived before 2007, but it still shows some interesting trends. It starts out as a blank screen, and ends up showing over 19000 caches.
The video was created from a slightly modified Python script that I found on a French geocaching website and a .gpx from GSAK. I would give credit to the original author, but I can’t read French.

06/04/2010 at 3:53 am #1930273Pretty cool. I saw a few of my own hides show up in the video.
06/04/2010 at 5:00 am #1930274That was VERY cool… thanks for the effort it took to do that TBC!!!!!!
06/04/2010 at 5:50 am #1930275That was great thanks for taking the time to figure that out and posting it. I caught a big of an explosion of lights in Waukau. That’s when BakRdz must have started caching.

06/04/2010 at 11:01 am #1930277I think if you set that to music, it’ll be ready for a wide release. Pretty interesting to go back in time and see the “creation” of caching in the state.
Following the signals from space.

😆 That’s too funny, because I thought the same thing! I watched the timeline for about when I started caching then looked up to suddenly see a little “off the strip” area just west of OshVegas burst into light.
Very Cool TBC! …but can’t you overlay a topo or road map next time? 😆
06/04/2010 at 12:34 pm #1930279Very cool! Thanks for doing that TBC, and for sharing it with all of us.
All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.
06/04/2010 at 12:59 pm #1930280Actually, if set to music, I think that would be very cool as part of a news segment… I would suggest sending it in to the fox network (I would think fox 6 in Milwaukee would possibly do something with it since they had caching with Condella… maybe it will kick start that part of the news again since the interest in the sport has really taken off lately)
06/04/2010 at 3:21 pm #1930281Thanks TBC, that was sweet. Posted it to facebook.
06/04/2010 at 3:52 pm #1930282I like seeing some of the “explosions” and then going back and finding out what they are from. It’s also interesting how the “sparkles” slow down every year during the winter.
I’m in the process of getting pre-2007 archived caches. There’s no automated way, so I can only download them when I find them. I found about 200 last night.
I’ll see what it looks like overlayed on a map, but I think the map will need to be “subdued” quite a bit. Good idea.
06/04/2010 at 8:35 pm #1930283That is so cool!! It reminds me of the Satalite image of the world at night that is soppose to show electricity uses. Awesome!
06/04/2010 at 9:27 pm #1930284Thanks Black Cat! I embeded this on my site ( with your permision)
06/05/2010 at 2:31 am #1930285That’s sweet.
