Out caching with BigJim60 this morning and afternoon in southern Marathon county.
On our way out of Leathercamp, I spotted this fresh track on the wet gravel trail. I’m glad I didn’t run into the guy who made this footprint.

Oh geesh… I would have soiled myself!!! I am really really thinking over the need to get to the store to pick up some bear mace if I go anything further than Ozaukee county…lol Heck, I may get some anyhow for when I am in Milwaukee county 😉 never know when you may run into a creep…

Nicolet National Forest near Wolf River
06/04/2010 at 5:02 am #1930292Carefull, don’t step in the…. whew… got lucky on that one… so, was that black bear poo? and if so, is brown bear poo brown?? 🙂
(sorry.. it is late.. I am a bit silly… but thanks for the pic, I am assuming that is what bear poo looks like and it is a good thing to know… since I didn’t previously!!)06/04/2010 at 5:03 am #1930293Do they? Why yes they do.
06/04/2010 at 5:08 am #1930294Someone chime in, but we took it as pre-berry-diet Black Bear scat/poo. Not trying to step in it, just trying to show size, and didn’t think of placing the gps by it. Since you mentioned stepping, always wondered, why they tend to poo in the middle of the trail? (We know……….cuz they can………………)
06/04/2010 at 5:33 am #1930295lol, all I know is that I don’t want to step in it…lol. And that picture of the bear on the toilet.. priceless… isn’t that always the way… you go to the bathroom and the kids just won’t leave you alone!!!! (just like being on the phone!!)

Team LEU posted a pic in his log, but it doesn’t show up as well as yours. It was the middle of the night and he was using his phone to take the picture.
I usually cache with someone that I’m pretty sure I could out-run.
06/04/2010 at 5:48 am #1930297Note to self: Don’t cache with TBC in bear country if they offer…. 😉
06/04/2010 at 11:36 am #1930298TBC, You can’t outrun us! Trekkin’s a marathoner and I ran long distance. We’re touched that you still go with us! 😉
There is a hilarious log on one of our caches in Hixon Forest, which had a resident bear until the local authorities over-reacted last summer.
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LUID=af1fb8b5-932d-42a5-9cf6-033c5f31ff1eBear sign is pretty common throughout the Black River State Forest in Jackson County, along with wolf sign. We were even lucky enough to encounter a pair of wolves there a couple years back AND I have the photos to prove it. This is one of the absolute joys of caching for us, bringing us into areas that increase the chances of close encounters.

No, Brown bear scat looks pretty much the same, except for the bits of flannel and denim in it.
All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.

LOL
Maybe if we see any scat we should poke it with a stick to see if there is a gps in it!! 😯 😯 😯06/04/2010 at 2:24 pm #1930302Twice while up north doing a delorme run I have had black bears run across the trail in front of me.
I will never forget the first time it happened because Tammy was standing there in the middle of the trail holding her camera yelling “stop, stop come back so I can take your pictures”.
