I know there are various bookmark lists of the “oldest by county/state” etc, but has anyone seen a listing of the remaining active caches in the continental US of caches published in 2000? I’d think with all the hoopla about the anniversary, there might be something like this. I just haven’t found it yet.
07/04/2010 at 7:33 pm #1932393Well, I went to the advanced search for caches, put in a state, went to the results, clicked to the end arrow, saw the caches with 00 for their publish dates. You can do that 48 or 50 times and make up a bookmark of your own. Don’t know if it’s been done yet or not.
07/04/2010 at 8:09 pm #1932394I just did it. Here’s the link…

I did discover in the process that someone else has also done this, but more for challenge completion purposes. While people can certainly help narrow their choices as they travel to meet a challenge cache, our thinking is more to showcase what’s remaining of geocaching’s original intent….hikes into areas of natural beauty with a box at the end, and probably a view to go with it.
Hope this helps a few. Minnesota and Illinois have the closest 2000 year caches. Iowa and Wisconsin don’t have any left. There are a couple caches out there dated well in advance of geocaching or probably even satellites….one in 1963 in Ca and one in 1942 in New Jersey. They are actually recently published caches that have time travel type themes!
There are precious few caches remaining that were placed in August 2000. Interesting trivia, I think I’ve been hanging around with TBC too much! 😈
I think only premium members can view the list. Not my choice, but groundspeak’s.
07/05/2010 at 1:03 am #1932395Wow… only 96 left in the whole country.
Nice job, Gwyn. Thanks. And how did that one by HeliDood make it into there? GC70 😉
07/05/2010 at 2:43 am #1932396looks like a challenge cache, we only have found 2 on the list, but after MWGB will be heading towards some of them.
07/06/2010 at 5:22 pm #1932397Barry, Actually, we have something like that in mind, just on a state wide scale. Just need to get my butt out to the location where we want to place it.
For those who want the “old time” caches mentioned in the power trail thread, this would be a good place to start.
07/06/2010 at 5:33 pm #1932398Maybe remove the fake old caches on the list?
07/06/2010 at 5:36 pm #1932399Dave, Are some of those not legit? I’ll run it all by you before submitting it, maybe. I have looked at the “founders'” profiles to see what they placed and found from those two years and added them to my bookmark. Figured if someone was lucky enough to find those, they should be able to count toward their total.
07/06/2010 at 5:45 pm #1932400Actually only one fake.
07/06/2010 at 6:16 pm #1932401Thanks for the catch. There were a couple others with that kind of thing going on, but I caught those.
The bookmark for our challenge will just have Wisconsin caches required. I’m kind of excited to see a couple near Napa on that 2000 list, though. Goof friends live in St. Helena and I want to go visit again. It’s been a few years since my last trip.
07/06/2010 at 6:31 pm #1932402Before we left dial-up for DSL, we couldn’t set a date for our cache hides. If the reviewers didn’t change them for us, or if we went in to edit something after publication, the date of the cache would show up as 1901. We would occasionally get an email to alert us to that fact: “Hey, I just did a search for oldest caches, and did you know that your cache was published in 1901?????”
Doesn’t happen anymore, but there was a time when a cache or two of ours was “vintage”. 😉
