I just spent some time going through our “wild” trackables, since of 11 we’ve released, we only get reports on one of them anymore. I emailed several people who retrieved trackables over two years ago and seemingly stopped playing. I posted notes to a couple more that show them in caches, asking people to verify their presence. About half of ours have long since been marked “unknown.”

So it may be that of those, 2-3 are actually still out in caches. We did have one reappear after a long absence, and it seems to be sitting in a cache near Seward Alaska that hasn’t been visited since it was dropped, so that’s okay.
This sure isn’t a very good ratio. It’s why we stopped putting any more out there. If some of these people write back and take care of them, we might release a couple more, but it…just….bugs…me!

Told you, my day to whine!

So what else is new? 😕

      Whine, whine, whine…
      😛

You know I’m kidding, so I won’t even duck and run.

I know a lot of trackables go missing because of new cachers, but I can’t believe that is the primary reason. The concept of trackables is so simple. It baffles me that it just doesn’t seem to work for the majority of TBs.

I just did the same thing a few weeks back. I was able to shake a couple loose, but many I contacted gave no reply at all.

We have about a 1/3 of ours missing – I believe we have launched over 30 of them now.

Many of our coins have gone MIA and I fear they are now in a collection some where. I doubt I will ever launch a coin again. The dog tags are not as valuable as the coins but seems we have about equal numbers of each missing.

We seen some pnubes had picked ours up last Nov in “Flatlandville” and they still have it. We e-mailed them 3 times and they compleatly ignored us. They haven’t picked up any caches since eather. What can I say?

Do you need a little cheese with that..??? Guess that is why they call them “Bugs” and not boomarangs.

I did get a response from one person, who still has the coin and just hasn’t been out much. To me, that’s good news. I’m with Lisa, probably not releasing any more coins. With the exception of the one just located and one probably in a cache in Alaska, those all have disappeared.

I know, nothing new, but it is still a baffling phenomenon.

What is more baffling and irritating is the fact that so many “last finders” refuse to even reply to emails. That’s just rude.

We have one coin out, and thought about releasing more but after all the troubles we’ve had with the one it really makes us wonder about doing trackables. I was hoping to get the coin back home on a trip, but last we heard it was heading for Georgia.
If we do bugs I think I may just go to Wallyworld and print a dog tag and keep the original and send the Walmart copy on its way so it won’t be a big loss.

I have 105 geocoins out circulating, none let loose in the past 2 years. Most of them were sent out to travel in 2007 and 2008.

About 80 are missing and about 25 are still traveling.

Interestingly, one of first coins I set free, PCCYKF, is a personal Zuma coin that Robin made for me and she only made 55 copies. It went missing out of the first cache that I put it in, and I marked it missing. Then 3 years later it reappeared and has been traveling well around the state. I imagine being one of just 55 coins made it might have some value to coin thieves (though I am sure featuring my likeness diminishs that somewhat). Anyway, the coin is traveling well, and recently Tami picked it up.

Ralph, Is that one of the ones with you and Jesse on it? I think we found and moved one of those. In fact, we may have moved it to one of your caches!

      re: coin thieves
There are a few things we can all do to make things a little better.

      1. If you visit a big event and see someone selling coins without activation codes, drilled coins, and other obvious thefts, complain to the event organizers and get everyone you know to complain. Basically make the event organizers life misery until they throw out the thieves.

      2. If someone shares with you their “collection” for discovery and you find that the coins are not theirs, let them know that you don’t appreciate their activities. If they continue to steal coins, out them in the forums.

      3. If you buy coins on Ebay that turn out to be stolen, report the seller and demand a refund due to stolen property. Try to get the coin back to the owner if possible.

Having a collection is a lot less fun if you can’t show it off.

Yes it is. Pretty rare coin. And I put the coin number in the last post, and I dont care if folks want to discover it or not. Sorry, no unique icon though.

WI.Hibiscus showed us an interesting concept on the travel bug thing on our way to Hilo a few weeks ago. I didn’t discover the TB but should have, but maybe she’ll chime in here also. They basically bought a TB tag and then engraved that number on a bunch of custom cut camels. I believe each camel also had a unique 1 of # on it or something similar. Basically you were allowed to keep / move the individual one and note # on the TB logging page. It was the first time I had seen anything like this, but was definately a unique way to propagate the TB.

Another issue I’m sure is that it’s getting tougher and tougher to find:

      a) a big enough cache to leave TBs, and

      b) one you feel is somewhat safe from inquiring fingers.

We try to move those we find pretty quickly, and most of the time we do, but when you have a day with nothing buy micros, which can happen a lot, it’s tought to trade or even just drop them. I’ve also become more likely to grab stuff even if I don’t have trade bugs, simply because I know we’ll move them quickly. For ours, we care less that they move quickly than that they move at all. I know some, especially kids and classes doing projects, like to see them move pretty fast. I just dropped one yesterday with a fun photo of a bunch of 2nd grade boys, who will be third graders in a couple months. Not sure how far or fast they traveled, but school’s out for summer.
