Gram and I took another caching trip, this time to NW Wisconsin. We found a bunch of caches, enjoyed terrific scenery, and added 13 counties to our Wisconsin count. But it’s not about the numbers, right?
We put on over 700 miles this time, averaged 52.? miles per gallon on our Prius, and had no problems. We found a variety of cache sizes and types, many chosen because of various WGA recommendations or good descriptions on gc.com. Some were just due to proximity to our route. Overall, our choices worked out well.
We have finds in 71 counties now. All that is left is Door. Gram and I went up there to a B & B for our 25th anniversary. Now we have a reason to go back!
Geocaching has given us a focus for two different multi-day roadtrips in WI. They have both been a lot of fun and allowed us to spend time together and see parts of our state that we are not familiar with. So even if not interested in your county count, we’d suggest that caching makes for a pretty nice mini vacation.

08/18/2010 at 1:14 pm #1934564Congratulations on all of your accomplishments! We like your approach and philosophy! And, to us, it sounds like you’ve left the best for last! We did our first caches while on an anniversary getaway to Door County, (that cache is at a B&B!) and enjoy going back caching up there whenever we can!
Best wishes and Enjoy!

08/18/2010 at 1:42 pm #1934565We have gone to Door County twice specifically to cache, both times in the off season. We’d camped with our kids a couple times years back, before caching. We love going up there in the winter. No crowds. A completely different feel. We had Cana Island light all to ourselves. Ditto on the Europe Bay cache, where we had the amazing good fortune to encounter a wolf pair on our way out. (Yes, there are DNR confirmed sightings of them up there).
Both times we stayed at the White Lace Inn Inn in Sturgeon Bay. Rates are really great off season, about like any chain motel. If you time a trip to be on a Thursday night, there’s free live music and beer! There are some caches up there we still want to do, but aren’t so easily accessed with snow.
We agree with your geocaching road trip philosophy. We spent a couple days this summer in west central Minnesota over to the SD border. Our caches were chosen much as you chose, and we discovered some wonderful spots known mostly to the locals. I have done the same thing with my long distance trips to Hawaii last summer and Newfoundland this. We hope yet to visit the North Shore of Minnesota with a cacher’s eye. I spent a lot of time there as a kid….Dad’s from Duluth….so I’ll be curious to see if it takes me anywhere new. Don’t care. Any excuse is a great one to travel there! It’s a great way to see all those little corners of a state and slows us down to appreciate the back roads and small towns.
08/18/2010 at 4:15 pm #1934566Door county is one of our favorite destinations in Wisconsin. My family originally settled there around 100 years ago in Sturgeon Bay. A GREAT getaway there is The Chanticleer B&B, if you can get a reservation.
Stop by The Houle House. It’s a Jewelry store now, But my Great Grandfather built it. Very unique stuff there!
08/18/2010 at 4:18 pm #1934567Awesome! Congrats! It’s definitely showed us some things even in our own “back yard”. My family has camped at Perrot State Park for over 37 years and my husband and I finally decided this summer to start hitting all of the state parks so our goal is to camp and GC at them over the next few years. I can’t quite sell him yet on the idea of a GC roadtrip day. We want to do some local parks in fall once the heat dies down so maybe next spring!
