Hi,
I have a dumb question… has anyone representing the WGA ever talked to local Governments or Chamber of Commerce to support Geocaching or even sponsor events… seems to me that the West Bend Event Brings in alot of people to the area…to local Governments that means more tax $$ and the local C.O.C. more Business.. and to us …more smiles 😀10/06/2010 at 12:00 pm #1936950Rhinelander, St. Germain, Boulder Junction had a 3 year grant to do some Geocaching events. The only one who really is continuing to do it is Boulder Junction.

10/07/2010 at 12:49 pm #1936952Wanted to add that even though cachers in our area (Northern) offered to help, gave ideas and explained more details about caching. Most chambers were so busy with other things they did a botch up job. Thinking that finding a TB would be how to reward FTF. Others just add new TBs once in a while and think that will draw cachers. Some put out many temps which do not draw cachers. Advertise in newspapers and do not go through the geocaching site. Some had caches approved but did not put them out til after the approval. It gets frustrating when several teams went to every meeting, were willing to help even more than they let us and still see many things that were done opposite of the way we explained.

Just want to add that I worked with the Chippewa Valley chamber for a few years, and they too went to great lengths to botch things up where ever they could, despite input from active geocachers.
In general, the Chambers that do a good job of promoting geocaching (West Bend, Hudson) are the ones that work closely with and listen to experienced and active geocachers. The ones who botch it up and do crazy things are much more common than the good ones.
We can, and should, continue to work with various chambers to help them pull off events that meet their goals and and also increase the number of quality caches. However, that objective is too often compromised by by Chamber staff who just do not listen.

That is only a partial list of Chamber snafus. There are many.
My favorite is the La Crosse temp cache that they placed literally 10 feet from an active permanent cache. D’Oh!

10/07/2010 at 4:46 pm #1936956Well Ralph, that could happen again. Looks like they are having the event again….it was posted two days ago and takes place on the 17th. I know many experienced cachers tried to work with them in the past to improve that event, but like others….they had their own idea. Last year, many of the hides were in glass jars. O–kay.
I know they want to promote it as a fun activity, but it would be nice if the folks setting it up had some decent field experience, which doesn’t really seem to be the case. They understand the technology and the general concept, but haven’t done enough actual caching themselves to have a really good sense of how it can all work. They mean well, but….
10/28/2010 at 10:53 pm #1936957ok kind of on the same line as this one…West Allis Business Improvement District is always doing a lot of things like trick of treat this weekend and holiday stroll in December, how would I go about maybe suggest a small event in downtown West Allis I would love to see something like Waukesha Winter JANBOREE AuntieNae used to do
