Just wanted everyone to have a heads up it is young hunter weekend. Each much be accompanied by an adult but they will be gun hunting for deer.
Wear blaze orange and or be extra careful on hunting lands.

    thanks TE!
I was just reminded last night by Sandlanders to find the orange jacket.

could be that some of those 10 yr olds are more responsible with a firearm than the adults 😕 😯

Oh yeah. Thanks for the reminder. But like Pete said, I’m more afraid of the adults than the 10 y.o.’s.

Not me. 10 y.o.’s aren’t required to have hunters ed (or at least they didn’t last year). So that means you have an undersized, uneducated youth with an irresponsible adult. Sorry but this is a sore subject with me because there are few (if any) 10 y.o.’s that are capable of shooting a rifle unassisted (as the rules state). That’s assuming that some idiot doesn’t ruin a childs outing by giving them a shotgun (God forbid) that hammers their shoulder.

But it is a great way to generate $$$$$ for the DNR, a great way to continue slaughtering the herd, a great way to hose up the hunting season for us bow hunters, and an AWESOME opportunity for the adult to bag a nice buck under the guise of “my child shot it”.

My plan – Head to the woods and spend a lot of time walking around in some high action areas. I doubt I’ll be popular with some people, but thankfully WI has open carry of sidearms.

True. Forgot about that. Guess I only thought of the responsible hunters I know.

The majority of the “responsible” hunters I know feel the same way I do about this 10 y.o. hunt. Think about the 10 y.o.’s that you know. Would you want them to shoot a 12 gauge shotgun with slugs? How about the popular 30.06? And we won’t even mention the 300 Mag, 7mm Mag, .50 Muzzleloader, etc.

I know there are a few of us that are responsible enough to use a reduced recoil load, youth load, etc. in a youth gun (shorter stock), but there aren’t many willing to spend the money to invest in these, so they just use the same weapon their “sponsor” uses.

Thanks for the heads up I didn’t realize when the 10 yr old hunt was. I’ll have to pay closer attention to the seasons this year. Last year I thought the muzzleloader season started the weekend after the regular season, only to find out it starts the day after. I was on Walk on the Wildside #6 when I started hearing shots. I luckily I had found it once before so I made the quick find and got my butt out of the woods.

I only know two kids who are taking advantage of this; one’s dad is a hard-core hunter and the kid (a daughter, btw) has all the right gear and hunter safety training. She’s also pretty good with a bow.

The other is 9 years old and can’t wait to get out with his dad (who is a DNR guy of some capacity) next year. When we talked about knife safety in my cub scout den (whittlin’ chip), the kid could pretty much give the lesson.

These two may very well be the exception rather than the rule, but I hope not.

And my 2 cents is that I am MUCH more worried about the group of 2 dozen weekend warriors who get together to drive a postage stamp sized field of corn and shoot at anything that moves. As a runner who lives in a rural area, hunting season is the time to wear blaze orange EVERYWHERE outside and reconsider any early-morning runs I have scheduled. In my time I’ve heard plenty of blasting outside before the sun has come up.

That sounds about right. In November when I go, the season does not open tell approx. 6:30. I have heard shots as early as 6:00. How can you see what you shooting at, much less what is past what you are shooting at. 🙁

I know Trekkin’ heard shots at fairly close range as he was heading into his spot well before sunup one year. There turned out to be a huge buck in the area, he probably stirred it up and boom, boom. He has not been out the past few years, as hunting public land is just getting too scary. He hunts with muzzleloader, btw.

Same here. There’s a huge number of irresponsible hunters out there. I’m staying the heck away from the woods. I get nervous even driving by the woods while I hear a rapid succession of gun shots…seriously if you need to be spraying 10 shots perhaps you shouldn’t have tried in the first place.

Bubolz was closed this past weekend for hunting. We tried to go caching there, but had to find other places to go instead.

I think there were more geocachers in the woods, at least in the Seeley hills than there were hunters. With most of the land up this way being county land, you can hunt pretty much anywhere. I did hear some shooting but I think it was duck and grouse hunters. Thou I was tempted to pull out my 12 ga and shoot of a couple of rounds when I was driveing down the one of the backroads and came across acouple of cars that I knew were geocaches just to give them a lil’ scare, but I decided against it. I thought it would have been funny…….
