So I’m burned out on traditionals and thought I’d look at my stats for a “Non-Traditional Challenge Cache” I’m building. What’s the most non-traditional caches you’ve done in a row? (I’m not looking for exactness, but just a general idea.)

I haven’t found a good way to be super accurate based on GSAK only giving me a “Found Date” for each cache (i.e. trad, multi, trad, puzzle, event all in the same day is giving me some grief). I’m building my logic assuming that all 3 non-traditionals would count for that day.

You could have fun with this:
    ie.find 10 multicaches in a row challenge/
    find 10 mysteries in a row.etc..
I have done 7 different non traditional in a row(wherigo, mystery, multi)
you could get 15 non traditionals at roche-a-cri in a row.
looking forward to what you come up with.
You dont need a program for that info just go under geocaching>your geocaching logs (filter by log type) found.

The catch to this challenge is that one traditional resets the counter back to 0. I completed the requirements for the “Busy Day Challenge” while at the Fall Picnic also. I also did some traditionals on this day though. For the Challenge cache it’s going to be a consecutive streak of non-traditionals.

I know Geolivestrong has a challenge already where you have to get x number of multi’s, puzzles, etc. but there’s not a “consecutive” or “no traditional” clause in it. Obviously resetting the counter with every traditional makes it a little more, well, “Challenging”.

I have a number in mind, but want to see what others think first.

In fact maybe I should call it the “Anti-Traditional Challenge”.

I totally understand what your going for,my record is 7 non traditionals in a row right now,I would think 15 non traditionals in a row would be a good number. Especially if you get to a certain caching area!

I’m right there with you CJ! I wanted to do something similar when I placed the picnic caches, but chose to instead put out something that people might be able to already qualify for and find while they were in the area for the picnic. I say make it tougher, the bigger the better, and bring it! Those who want it will do it, so I think you should make it what YOU would want. I’ll be waiting….. 😀

Cool idea but like you mentioned, verification will be a problem. If I find 30 caches in a day I can log them in any order I like.
I would guess that MOST people would complete the challenge the way it is intended. If you don’t mind having a few low-life cheaters logging the find, you can just use their GC profile to verify.

I’m thinking to make it “easier” to verify, just letting any non-traditionals from the first / last day count and not worry about the order. Oh yeh – It’s going to have a multi-day requirement as well so you can’t just do a puzzle finding run and rack up the required numbers in a single day.

    Example:
    Day 1: 3 Traditionals, 2 Non-Traditionals
    Day 2: 28 Non-Traditionals
    Day 3: 1 Traditional, 14 Non-Traditionals

    The total would be 2 + 28 + 14 = 44.

Any day that has a traditional will start / stop the “streak counter”, but all not traditionals within the same day would count towards the total.

I need to work on the wording to clarify, but the target is > 20 which I’ve easily done already.

Keep the input coming though as it’s helping me think of the pitfalls and things I’ll need to include in the requirements.

Sounds like a fun challange. My best would be 13 mystery,s in a row with no traditional in between. However I did log one in there. It was the Can you count series near Hartford, with a few WSQ’s that were near by.

I’d really have to hunt to find the listing again, but while Zuma and I were over in Michigan last time, we saw a cache in the Grand Rapids area that required you to progressively find one mystery cache the first day, two the second, three the third, etc. for six days in a row, each day with an increasing number of minimum difficulty and terrain stars. “The Devil Made Me Do It” or some such. I knew I didn’t qualify for that one for sure, so we drove on by.

We have a good variety of challenge caches in this state, but there are quite a few bizarro ones across our neighbors’ borders.

Seth, There’s something like that in the Twin Cities metro. One of the multitudes of KB challenges, many of which are close to my parents’ home, since KB also lives in the area. Thus, many of which we’ve taken the time to try and qualify. I’d have to look back to see how it worked. It might have been simply a progressive one MN find, two MN finds kind of thing. The day could include only MN caches, and the number had to be right on the head for that day.

Lately, though we still pursue various challenge caches, it seems like there are so many now. We’ve been sort of creating our own personal challenge/goals more and more. We won’t get a separate smiley for any of those, but it still helps guide our caching choices. I think at this point, we just hope to finish up the waterfall one, do the Rustic Road one and finish the MN DeLorme. It gets to be more time consuming to sort out all these challenges, and I’m running out of bookmarks, anyway. LOL

Testing my own challenge and logged 9 yesterday. My previous best streak is around 25 so we’ll see how I do on this go around.

Going through this little exercise showed me one thing…..we don’t really discriminate or go out to do “puzzle runs,” “earthcache runs” or that kind of thing. We’ll have a section on the GSAK My finds with a nice mix of a little of everything, but there’s always a traditional or three in there, too.

Lots of clumps of 4-5. Quite a few of 8 non-traditionals. The best I found was 15, and many, but not all, of those were Marc’s 900 Cemetery series, for which we did do the ALRs. I think there were a few multis and an EC or two in that mess, too.

10 more logged today taking me to 22. As a puzzle junkie I thought it would be easy to just skip the traditionals, but was I wrong. I’ve know had 3 different days where I’ve literally walked within 100′ of a traditional, but left it go to work on this challenge. Doing the challenge myself has given me some great ideas on how to build the requirement list.

We generally have to travel 50 miles or more to spend a day caching now, so it’s just not smart for us to be skipping stuff, especially with gas prices doing what they do. So that makes it tough for us to pass things up, which is probably why, even though we can see runs of non-traditionals, there’s a green box or two among the mix. Same with the guardrails…..though we don’t particularly love those, if they’re in the area, we aren’t going to stick our noses up at them, either. 😉 The same will probably be true of gls’s new challenge….we aren’t going to drive that far to get just a handful of caches. Both of these challenges are ones that a newer cacher definitely can have the edge, which is nice for a change.

I’ll be interested to see what others are able to do with this. If nothing else, it should help get those other icons that usually get passed by most folks a little more love.

    #1938107

OK, Gwyn. Here’s how you do the challenge CJ is thinking of: You find a spot that has more than a handful of non-traditional caches, make a trip there, pick up those caches, go home, sit for a few weeks, do the same again. No caching in between, no traditionals, no going for FTFs (unless they’re non), and you will save tons on gas.

You said you were slowing down, didn’t you? 😉
