I see our neighbors to the West are considering a virtual Geocachers Hall of Fame.
This may be an interesting idea for the membership of the WGA to think about too. I could see photos and stories of notable Wisconsin Geocachers, historical events and characters, special caches and lots of interesting stories (true or enhanced) hehe
What do you think?12/27/2010 at 12:49 am #1940856I don’t like the idea. What keeps thisgame and community what it is, is that it is noncompetitive. No one really keeps track of geo-accomplishments comparatively, LCG and FTP stats notwithstanding 😉 . Having a hall of fame, even if it’s just semi-serious, runs counter to that and, let’s face it, there are some egos out there that don’t need any more inflating.
Just my 2 cents, your mileage may vary, etc. etc. etc.

Gotta agree with gotta run. Seems like this might be taking our game just a bit too seriously. We were reading the posts on this topic over on the Minnesota site and the discussion seemed to have devolved into talking about who was in the top ten in the world in overall finds.
12/27/2010 at 1:14 am #1940858Sounds like something that would recognize only a small portion of Wisconsin cachers and intimidate and discourage new cachers. I personally wouldn’t want to be included. I get enough recognition locally and sometimes I find it isolates me from some new cachers. I don’t see it having any value in promoting Wisconsin geocaching. Of course that’s only me and I respect everyones opinions on the subject.
.
12/27/2010 at 1:19 am #1940859Agreed, this is probably not such a good idea. There is a cache series locally which makes mention of some geocachers and there were some who were not mentioned who felt slighted.
12/27/2010 at 2:52 am #1940860I agree, I don’t see much value in a hall of fame.
All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.
12/27/2010 at 3:00 am #1940861I also see little value in this except to pad some otherwise all ready big egos
12/27/2010 at 3:26 am #1940862We enjoy a movie at this time of year titled “A Christmas Without Snow” about choir members rehearsing for a performance of Handel’s “Messiah”. A fair-weather diva soprano, with no tolerance for the mistakes other members of the singing group were making with the music, walks off in a huff, calling them all “amateurs”. Then the choir director, played by John Houseman, makes a small speech that I have taken to heart since first hearing it. Think of geocaching and why we do it in the context of the following quote, and you will see where I get my opinion that we do not need a geocaching HOF in Wisconsin.
“Mrs. Burns is right, of course; you are amateurs, unlike certain pseudo-professionals like myself who insist on slave wages. Your voluntary and steadfast attendance at these rehearsals fully qualifies you for any definition of the word “amateur”. What Mrs. Burns and many others are wrong about is the meaning of the word, which has to do with motivation, not quality. Remember “amo, amat, amas”, the Latin verb “to love”. The meaning of “amateur” is “he or she who does a thing for the love of it”. There is no higher reason for singing than the love of doing it. In that respect, you do qualify as amateurs. And I salute you for it. “
12/27/2010 at 3:57 am #1940863OK,
What I’ve heard so far seems a bit short sighted but I can live with that.
I guess I’ll go back to shoveling, r’ I mean caching. 😕12/27/2010 at 1:08 pm #1940864@Da Bloodhound wrote:

I guess I’ll go back to shoveling, r’ I mean caching. 😕No such thing as a stupid question, and it never hurts to ask. Well, maybe a tiny bit if you were anticipating different results.
I echo all of the above, in that the cons would likely outweigh the pros. Ego-brusing does happen in this community on occasion via the competitive venues already established and those bruises can last a while. Ask any LCG player who anticipated a win and was blind-sighted by a sandbagger.
We also have a system, though crippled by design, for recognizing great caches. COTM has improved a bit, but cannot account for great caches that get visited by few for one reason or another. However, the long-awaited, argued for and newly implemented “Favorites” function will. In the end, the best praise is what permeates through cache logs and will always be the best wall for de facto Hall of Fame cachers… hiders and seekers both.

I agree. I love that folks try to add to the game…some ideas are great and some are not. This one has been tried to some extent here and has caused some issues. I’m glad you dropped the idea though…I love to see new ideas!
12/27/2010 at 3:40 pm #1940866Agreed. New ideas are always welcome. Heck, Jim and I suggested adding recycling rescued cache containers to the Lonely Cache Game. That got about as much interest as as yesterday morning’s malt-o-meal. I did however, because one of the containers we were looking at when we came up with the idea was really too well-crafted to recycle, include it in a soon-to-be-published multi. Just because I liked it too much not to use it.
Kind of like Sandlander’s story about amateurs. I loved that too! 😉
01/06/2011 at 10:58 pm #1940867It would seem like a neat idea but only if……….. the hall of Fame would reside in Central Wisconsin. But realistically it would be in the south.
01/06/2011 at 11:27 pm #1940868By the way, sagasu, I recycled the “other” container today, that we Rescued in Wausau last November. 8)
