The biggest evolution in the way that the WGA functions is our move towards empowered committees. One of the advantages of having empowered committees is that the goals of the association are more than what just 9 people on the Board of Directors can reasonably do. A second advantage is that it provides opportunities for non-board members to participate in the growth and success of the association.

So, I have 3 questions for all the candidates, and then I will provide my own response. First, do you agree that our gradual move towards well functioning empowered committees is a good idea, or would you prefer a move back towards central control by just the 9 board members? And second, what contributions did you make in the last year by participating on our committees? And third, whether you are successful or not in winning election this time around, do you plan on being a part of any of our empowered committees in the coming year?

My response is that I am strongly in favor of the board supporting the work of empowered committees, since I feel that we can accomplish much more this way than any other way that I can think of. It has been a bumpy road in getting all the committees up and running smoothly, but we are making great progress, and my major goal for the coming year is to continue the transition towards well functioning empowered committees.

To review where we are at right now: The WGA has 3 standing committees, each of which has 3 board members on it, as well as 4 – 8 non-board members. Those committees are the Membership Committee, the Web Committee and the Community Education Committee.

We also have an ad hoc geocoin committee that was added last spring, that was not set up as one of our standing committees.

We also have short-term committees that come and go for each of our events. These include the Campout, Picnic, West Bend, and Winter Event committees.

In the past year, these committees had many successes, and I could provide a long list of those successes. Each committee also had challenges and in some cases were not able to do everything that we hoped, but I am a realist and realize that not everything is going to succeed on the first attempt, but if we keep plugging away, we can accomplish much.

This is your chance as a candidate to talk about what the committee(s) you were on last year accomplished.

    Thank you.

i am fully behind the use of empowered committees to help make the WGA better. I feel that committees are an excellent way to have the general membership both have a say in the inner workings of the WGA and it’s a way for them to give back to the WGA as well.

I am currently on the Web Committee, and West Bend Cache Bash Committees. As a member of the Web Committee I have helped with testing of the new website, had input into our move to a new web server, and have helped on other decisions both great and small.

No matter the outcome of the BOD election I plan to continue to support the WGA through serving on the committees I’m currently on as well as join others if I feel my talents can be useful.

I think that the committees are a good idea, the more people working towards a common goal, the better chance of it getting done, and more heads = more ideas.

second, what contributions did you make in the last year by participating on our committees?

About October of last year I was added to the geocoin/pathtag committee when I had the idea to design these:

For those of you that do not know, It is a “tag back” each time a person chooses to put this on the back of a pathtag (it costs .10 for each tag) that money is donated to the WGA. A reoccurring fundraiser that costs the WGA nothing to participate in.

third, whether you are successful or not in winning election this time around, do you plan on being a part of any of our empowered committees in the coming year?

If I could I would like to stay on the Coin/Pathtag committee next time around

I have been thinking for several hours on how to answer this question delicately and have decided that it just can not be done, so here goes:

Ralph, you have mentioned, or strongly suggested, on more than one occasion now that you believe that participation on a standing committee should be a requirement, or STRONG consideration, for BOD candidacy. I would need to respectfully disagree.

As a current board member you and your eight fellow board members have quite a bit of control on who serves on those committees. You are able to limit the amount of non-board members serving on the standing and empowered committees and you are able to personally invite non-board members to serve on committees. Therefore, if it where a requirement, or a strong suggestion that BOD candidacy or qualification be based on committee work, the current board could and would have considerable input and influence on who they would like to see run for BOD in upcoming elections. This type of thinking is harmful and leads to further alienation and potential classism with in the WGA. I think we can agree that one of the concerns we hear about membership is isolation and insinuating that qualification for BOD be based on past work for the WGA only furthers that isolation.

I agree that having committee work on your resume is an indication that an individual is committed to the WGA but there are also many other factors to consider. Enthusiasm, and the willingness to better the sport is a prime factor in my opinion.

In the past, I have offered my services to the WGA only to be ignored. I have seen others offer their services only to eventually be told that their PM did not make it to the email of the requestor or that there were already enough members on that committee. I came to the conclusion that my offers of assistance were ignored because they either had too much help or that I was not to be a part of the club because I was not particularly popular amongst those that made the decisions.

I have offered in the past to assist with the spring campout and to take whatever signage and material needed to Geowoodstock or Midwest GeoBash. I got absolutely no response. Finally, one of the individuals associated with the spring campout asked me to hide a few permanent caches beforehand. Even though I have had some serious disagreements with this individual in the past I agreed because it wasn’t about me and him, it was about the membership in general.

I hope I have answered your questions here. Committee work is important if it is not used as the fault excuse for leadership when something goes wrong. As I have mentioned before, my commitment to accepting the nomination means that I understand that my commitment to the WGA will increase considerably. I understand that I will be involved in one or more committees or projects. I accept that premise otherwise I would not have accepted the nomination.

Thank you for your question Ralph.

I fully support the empowered committees, as I have served on them for a few years. I currently sit on the Membership Committee, Website Committee, Geocoin Committee and the Community Education Committee.

I cannot take credit for any individual accomplishments on these committees, as it is a team effort. But in this past year we have created brochures and handouts for community education, both for the public and for police/first responders. We created and minted the new 2010 Geocoin and Pathtag. We completely revamped the COTM and COTY project and made it better, and more fair for the membership. And the website committee has been one project after another with many, many changes made, and coming very soon. I’d Like to take this space to publicly thank Brian of Team Black Cat for all of his hard work with this project. He deserves a HUGE portion of the credit for much of what has been done, and the upcoming changes.

With all the changes being made within the WGA, I don’t think it possible for just the board to handle alone. Whether elected or not, I intend to stay with all of these committees, and I don’t see myself leaving anytime soon. I truly enjoy contributing to these committees and to the WGA membership.

I too support the empowered committee focus. The goals are more than what just 9 people can reasonably do and it does allow for members to get involved, give input, and provide leadership. I have been involved with the Education Committee for several years but I have not seen the committee really take off with the potential I see there. As a Board member, we do have access into participating with all the committees so I have tried to do. In another question posted, I did comment that I would like to see perhaps a focus on getting others up and running across the state who are prepared to do the Geo101 type classes. And, yes, I will stay involved with the Education Committee.

First off I have to say I agree with having empowered committees. I do not agree having as many board members on the committees. Reason being is they take over the committees and do not let others have input. I am currently serving on the membership committee, where as a team we have revamped the COTM and COTY. The only problem I have had while serving on the membership committee was during the West Bend Cache and Bash where I was told since I was the committee chair I was to run the membership booth with averith and then everyone walked away leaving us with no brochures or any hand out information. All we had was word of mouth about the WGA and that’s it so we did do a lot of talking but no guidance from others or had a BOD member present. During the day I was asked several times where BOD members were and all I could say was caching. Please don’t take this as a bashing of the current BOD but this is something that needs to change. The Membership committee was only started about 2 months prior to the event. But there needs to be some changes to the committees.

I think there should be only 1 to 2 board members on committees. I think the person who is voted to be committee chairman should be in contact with a BOD member and they discuss what’s going on and then that BOD member can relay the message or have the committee chairmen there at the BOD meetings to bring up what is going on in the committee or what projects the committee is working on.

If I am elected or if I am denied I still plan on serving on the membership committee. If I am not elected I would like to also join the education committee.

First: “Empowered” committees do and can work very well! The question here as pointed out by one of the other candidates is are they truly empowered? This comment concerns me and I think the entire WGA membership would like to know more.

Second: Being a WGA member for only a short while, I have not made any steps in this direction. I still feel as though I’m a real outsider here, I need to earn more acceptance by the membership.

Third: I definitely like the idea of getting myself involved in some of these committees, I have been poking around and inquiring.
