I’m hiding a series of caches on a trail. Is it ok, to archive my caches then hide a different series on the same trail after a year or two? To me it makes sense to archive and re-hide in the same area. Just curious want you all have to say on the subject.
01/28/2011 at 5:47 pm #1942530I’m curious. Why archive / re-hide vs just keeping the existing caches?
01/28/2011 at 6:02 pm #1942531Have the current series caches been there a year or two or were you going to wait a year or two after archiving to put up a new series? just a little confused on your question.
once archived, that spot is open for immediate placement again if you wish.
If the area is interesting enough to warrant another visit to the same place, I wouldn’t see anything wrong with that plan. visiting the same guardrail again however… (if you see what I mean)quickly re-reading makes me think you have yet to place the initial series.
if that is correct, it is hard to say what may change in a years time or more.Disclaimer : Always answering to a higher power.
01/28/2011 at 6:33 pm #1942532They are your caches, you decide their life expectancy. Just let me know which ones so I can log them first :>
01/28/2011 at 6:51 pm #1942533Keep in mind that if you archive a cache and hide another one in the same place bringing people to the same spot, regardless of how “worthy” the spot is you will get some sorta “negative logs” like “been to the cache that was here before” kinda logs. Usually the type that complain are the number hungry cachers who clear the map every so often (at least the ones who don’t copy and paste log)
The only preventative for complaints is to do something new and unique with the spot so that it doesn’t matter it’s the third time you’ve brought a cacher to this particular set of coordinates.
Or put on a flame retardant suit and not care what other people say.
It’s your cache so you can do what you please.
01/28/2011 at 8:47 pm #1942534My plan was to hide them leave them there for a year or two. Archive them. Then hide a differn’t series. As popular as this sport is it is possible to run out of spaces in an area. By archiving after a certain period, it would allow for more hide/finds in an area. the plan is to hide completly differn’t caches on the same trail
01/28/2011 at 10:19 pm #1942535When I first started caching, I had the same idea. But over time, I realized that maybe putting out some quality caches, as well as numbers runs, would make for a nice variety of hides. Hide your caches, see what happens over the next 2 years, then make the decision. Who knows what direction Groundspeak will take us in the next 2 years. Trails make for a great area for 3 or 7 container series of caches.
Or do a few multis and see how few cachers visit your hides! 😉

We try to think of something unique for each one of them. Some are better than others, some we like better than others.
We put out caches for others to find. We put them out for others to have a caching experience like we might want. We do not put our caches out with the idea that the more we put out, the more people can raise their cache find counts.
But that is us. People play the game all kinds of ways.

I think this is called churning.
Hmmm, just read this blog and the related GC forum topic.
Sounds like this isn’t a new thing but sounds like it would depend on the reviewer. I guess I would read through this to see what issues could arise before making archive/rehide plans.Disclaimer : Always answering to a higher power.
01/29/2011 at 2:55 am #1942539I agree with Sandlanders. I place caches that I generally intend to have a long run. Not every hide turns out as I would hope or as I expected.
I also agree with -cheeto- that seeing the same spot reused is generally a ho-hum experience. Recently there were a number of puzzles archived in the Appleton area and many of these spots were filled with traditionals. Each to their own, but revisiting a sign post isn’t my idea of a good time.
01/29/2011 at 4:21 am #1942540all my caches are placed with the intentions of staying there untill I decide to quit the game. I noticed that the Big Eau Pleine County Park does not have a single cache there. It is just a few miles from your town and has plenty of room for numerous caches there. Talk with the parks dept to find out who to get in touch with in order to hide there. There is also plenty of DNR land in the same area. There are other options open to you instead of archiving and rehiding in the same area.
