    2nd time around

      Can enyone tell me what is up with the new red needs maintenance symbols on the geocaching website? We have two caches that have these symbols attached to them but nobody posted a needs maint. message. I went out to check on them both today and there is nothing wrong with them. I would like to know how I can have them removed so other cachers do not think there is something wrong with them… Thanks for any help anyone can pass along my way..

        Just post a owner maintenance log and they go away.

            There was a “needs maintenance” on GCY5MF on 3-14-10. You’re “performed maintance” log today should make it go away the next time the cache pages are updated on geocaching.com. You must post a “performed maintenace” to make a “needs maintenance” dissapear.

              Actually, there is a second way to remove it. You can just go to the attributes page and turn it off. (note that you can also turn it on in the same manner…) And, yes, I agree that this is probably not the best situation, but that is how it works.

                On a related note….I noticed today a “request for archive” on a local cache, requested by a brand new account called “NeedsArchival.” We have traveled this road before in the past in this hobby and it may have been helpful in some cases, but it also had many negative repercussions. May I respectfully suggest that if a person feels a cache needs archiving, to just go ahead and make that request with their own handle? If a person fears backlash from their actions, perhaps they could approach the situation in a different manner? It may be that whoever NeedsArchived is, they’ve tried other approaches, but none of us should feel the need to hide when suggesting any kind of action. Thank you.

                  Getting a little off topic, but I saw that one too and looked at the cache and there are many steps that can be taken on this one before a suggestion of “needs archiving”. Maybe there’s some friction between the two parties involved?

                    I just looked at that account and it has a status of Locked, wont be seeing any more from that account I dont think.

                      Actually, it didn’t meet my criteria for action (we already have a system for disabled caches), but I didn’t complain to Groundspeak about them. I’m guessing the cache owner was not amused and blew the whistle. As far as I can tell, they only posted to the one cache.

                        We’re helping out the owner, who is lucky enough to be somewhere without snow for awhile. That cache was one of our very first finds, and there were just two DNFs recently from finders who don’t have tons of experience yet. Not sure why someone felt the need to do that, but we’re happy to help out cache owners when we can if they want the help….which he does. It’s one of those kinds of places that is a wonderful place to visit, but there is a fair amount of activity in warmer months and leads to things disappearing from time to time. The very first LaCrosse Storytelling Festival was held here, we used to be part of a fur trade re-enactment there, and the location holds some great memories for us, so it’s an honor to help keep this 5+ year old cache going.
