I tried a few months ago to upload pictures of a geocaching event into the WISCONSIN GEOCACHING EVENTS folder. After an hour or so of uploading, I couldn’t figure out where they went to, but they sure didn’t go into the folder I intended to upload them to. This week, I discovered that they did indeed upload to the WGA site, but into a “WGA Members” gallery under my user name. So THAT’s where they are! We take pictures of almost every cache we find, but can’t post many of them at geocaching.com because they would be spoilers.
Did I do something wrong when uploading? If the WGA Members gallery is the only place that general members can upload than so be it. But I was hoping to bring some more recent pictures to those other galleries. They’re getting pretty old. I noticed that once they’re in the user album, the user can move them from there into other galleries (if you know how), but can they just be directly loaded into the intended albums? That would make the galleries/albums more current.
Here’s what the galleries currently have:
a. The WGA Events album has 7 folders from 2006, and 7 pictures in 1 album from 2010.
b. The Wisconsin Geocaching Events album has 6 folders from 2006, 3 pictures in 1 folder from 2008, and 22 pictures from 1 folder in 2009.
c. The Wisconsin Photos album has only 6 pictures in it, 5 from 2009 and 1 from 2010.
d. The WGA Members album has TONS of pictures in it, but I wonder if people know to look in there. They are of course arranged by member rather than event. They can be moved from the member album to an event album (if people are aware of how to do it). I would guess that people would look at the event albums more often if people were able to upload pictures to an event album. But I don’t know how to do that other than to upload them first to my user album, then transfer them to a different album.A special kudos goes to -cheeto-; he has multiple sub galleries arranged by topic in his photo album, all from the past year. Nice job 🙂
So again, is there a way I’m not aware of to upload directly to the various topical albums, or should I just upload to my own user-name album? I’m fine with either way, but I think the former would be more beneficial to the group rather than the latter. In either case maybe the photo galleries will get a bit more traffic if people read this post ❗ Thanks,
John
02/22/2011 at 1:44 am #1943469You only see 7 albums in the WGA Events folder? There are 27 albums, the most recent are from the LCG event two weeks ago, the 2010 picnic and the 2010 highway cleanup event.
We don’t allow uploads to the WGA Event folders for a number of reasons. I don’t think you are able to move pictures to those albums either. If you have a few event specific pics that you would like to be included, let me know.
There have been hundreds of photos uploaded by members in the past year besides cheeto. I watch the “View Latest Updates” link and hand pick some to show up on the top of the front page. I’m pretty sure one of yours is in the rotation.
02/22/2011 at 1:48 am #1943470Oh, and unless I’m missing something, having member’s galleries under the heading of WGA Members seems like a logical place to find them. They do get viewed. The gallery just isn’t as popular as the time wasters’ thread.
02/22/2011 at 2:25 am #1943471Thanks for the explanation Brian. In the future I’ll mainly upload to my username folder. A couple of interesting observations – I felt pretty silly when you mentioned there were 27 albums in the WGA Events folder when I said I only saw 8. I could have sworn there were only 7 from 2006 and 1 from 2010. Now I went back and looked and sure enough there were more, this time I saw 23 folders (still not 27 as mentioned, but close enough). My bad. Then I tried an interesting experiment. I was able to move a picture from my username folder to the “Wisconsin photos” folder, probably because it’s not an event folder. Then just to experiment I tried to move one to the 2011 LCG folder and you’re right, it doesn’t give me an option to transfer to that folder – admins only. There are about 20 event folders that will accept transferred pictures (such as the 2010 Potawatomi Area Council Expo & the 2010 Winter Bonfire/Chili Feed), so probably when those galleries were created someone didn’t check the box that others couldn’t upload to it.
Anyway, thanks for the explanation; it all makes sense. And LOL @ the time wasters thread comment 🙂
