I downloaded the android app from groundspeak to the wifes phone and the distance is way off has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix this. I’ve uninstalled and then reistalled it and still it is off.
02/22/2011 at 9:51 pm #1943518I cache almost exclusively with the app for the Droid. I have always found it to be very accurate except for when the sky is stormy. Could this be the problem? Along power lines it also can be thrown off just a little. I hope you get the hang of it, I love being able to use it. 😀

02/22/2011 at 10:35 pm #1943519I was within 20 feet…but I used a free App on my Driod.
02/22/2011 at 10:42 pm #1943520I use C:Geo and with the sattelites turned on, it is very accurate. I have not tried the app that gc.com sells because I have read there are a lot of problems with it.

02/23/2011 at 12:29 pm #1943521I have read that there are a lot of problems with it too. All I know is that I found other free apps confusing and the one from Groundspeak was very easy for me to use. At first it had a few problems (I purchased it only a week after it came out) but it has been updated since then and works much better. I hope that you figure it out!

02/23/2011 at 5:52 pm #1943522Can anyone tell me how to calibrate the compass for either the C:geo or the Groundspeak caching app please..
I checked how accurate both apps were and they were both off I place cache down the road from my house and I pulled that cache up on both apps and the groundspeak app sait it was .58 miles from my house with a accuracy of 2.33 miles theres no thats right my oregon 550 says its 250ft from my house. and the c:geo app says its .60 miles. well I guess that kinda god that there close but yeah. Even when I walked to the cache the distance didnt even moveit stayed the same on both apps. HELP.
Im glad I dont have this problem with my blackberry trimble app I love that app
02/23/2011 at 6:09 pm #1943523We are not Groundspeak, but we have a good working relationship with them. Since c:Geo is such an extreme sore spot with GC, lets not discuss it here.
Thanks.02/23/2011 at 10:16 pm #1943524@Team Black-Cat wrote:

Thanks. Why is this a sore spot? Because the app is free and works just fine? 9.99 is a lot to pay for any app. Groundspeak should drop the price to 4.99 or better. But until then C:geo it is!! Works great, updating 2-3 times a week and the developer is great at answering e-mails. Sorry I love Groundspeak as much as the next cacher, but competition is VERY healthy!

Do you have the gps turned on. It is sounding like the phone is pull coordinates off the cell towers. My android will put me off about a mile when I don’t turn on the actual gps receiver.02/24/2011 at 1:30 am #1943526Thanks Frmr I think that might be the problem now I just have to figure out how to turn it on

Be also aware that leaving on the GPS feature will drain your battery at a faster rate.

02/24/2011 at 3:03 am #1943530I’m not well versed and IANAL but the “sore spot” may have to do with the use of that particular software violating Groundspeak’s Geocaching.com terms of use.

02/24/2011 at 3:50 am #1943531I don’t understand the concern against talking about c geo in these forums. There are plenty of threads here that B&M about stuff that groundspeak does. There’s plenty of stuff to read that they could be unhappy about.
I note that groundspeak doesn’t seem to be scrubbing the term from their forums anymore. I think they’d be better served to create a sticky of some sort about it or specifically reference it in the TOS. How many average users really understand anything about spidering and scraping?
