How many of you are cutting back on geocaching due to the rising gas prices?
I know I am definitely cutting back on my own geocaching outings. I even passed up six FTF opportunities of caches about 25 miles away or so. Five of those were found by another cacher a few days after publication and a 6th is still unfound a week after publication. I could have had an easy 6 FTF’s in one day, but chose to stay home and conserve gas.
I had plans for a weekend outing in May 13-15 in a cache saturated area TBD for a 3 day numbers run, but am considering canceling that if prices continue to rise.
Last April I had 150 finds for the month. This year, just 23 finds for the month of April and only because I went to an event up north and cached while I was there.
Prices have stabilized for now, but I’m sure they will go up again just in time for the Easter holiday traffic.
How about the rest of you?
04/20/2011 at 7:26 pm #1946863Nothing wrong with prioritizing financially!
I used to duck hunt. But a license, 2 stamps, steel shot, gas, and time… it was cheaper to eat duck in a restaurant!!
I grabbed one cache this afternoon, but it was near where I had errands to run. I couldn’t justify a special trip early this morning. I still got the FTF, but wasn’t expecting it.
Caching is, truthfully, recreation. It is other things, too, but if the $ is tight, so be it. Find some when your passing through an area and the itch will be scratched! 😉
04/20/2011 at 7:37 pm #1946864Exactly what I’m doing this spring, J & L. My son plays for the local high school tennis team so when he has a road meet, I’ll use the opportunity to pick up a few caches here and there.
I’m going to save up a bit more for my gas expenses for my May trip. I’ve been planning to do this for a while – where I don’t know – but I do have vacation time set aside to do it.
I think I can manage at $4 or less a gallon but if it goes over that, then I have a decision to make.
04/20/2011 at 8:48 pm #1946865We eliminated trips to the doctor and visiting relatives so we would have enough gas for geocaching.
04/20/2011 at 8:50 pm #1946866I “justify” some of my caching by using the price difference in gasoline. If the norm is $3 / gallon (pick your value) and it’s now $4 / gallon that means I’m paying an extra $1 / gallon. At 20 mpg that works out to an additional $0.05 / mile. It all depends how far you’re going to travel and certainly a personal decision for each of us, but this is how I analyze it.

Set your norm @ $5/gal, and you’ll actually be making money as you run for your FTFs and LCGs! 😆

I suppose you’re cutting back on those weekly visits to church, too. 🙄 😉

I view geocaching as using discretionary income. That includes gas in addition to all of the other costs involved. If you have money to spend on recreation or entertainment, you choose how to spend it: movies, sports, eating out, concerts, museums, geocaching… whatever. It’s like what you do with every expense: prioritize, make a budget, stick to the budget, reassess.
So if geocaching is what you want to do and you have some extra money with which to do it, just figure in a bit extra or stay closer to home if the price of gas goes up too high for the budget.
04/20/2011 at 9:52 pm #1946869Gas prices going up is pretty inevitable, given that demand is going to increase as the global economy improves. It is just one more factor to consider when using discretionary income. I dont anticipate tapering off caching much as a result though. A big factor, at least for me is time.
In many ways, caching is cheaper now than ever, despite the increase in fuel. There are many more local caches, so one does not have to travel far to find a new cache. Plus when you do travel, there are caches just about everywhere now.
Another reason that caching is becoming a cheaper sport is that the technology is cheaper. Many new cachers do not even have to buy a GPS, since it is pretty easy to cache with a smart phone. I still prefer my Garmin, but it has become a luxury, one not really needed to cache any more.
So, when gas hits 5 bucks a gallon, like it certainly will, I dont see it making a lot of difference.

04/20/2011 at 10:08 pm #1946870I view it similar to Mrs. S. We have a gas budget (we budget every dollar and yes, some is budgeted for entertainment so geocaching falls in that.) That’s a variable budget item though and if we have to choose between food and gas for work/school vs gas for geocaching, food and the livelihood come first.
Not everyone manages their money that way. We have one fixed income and need to do it that way. That doesn’t make it right or wrong, just the way we need to do it.
I understand Todd’s original post concern as I plan my daily routine based on gas lately. My kids go to school across town, so I stay on that side of town to avoid the gas back and forth. This morning I spent an hr at one school and another hour at the other. If the weather had been less sloppy, I probably would have picked up some smileys that I loaded last week for that side of town. For geocaching, we plan our caches based on proximity to one another.
I will say to Zuma’s point though, in Oshkosh, I’m already seeing a need to expand our area as we’ve found the majority of the traditionals. I’m the only one that really likes puzzles or multis, so I have to solve them and then work them into a route when we go. I have our sights on a series here in Oshkosh that takes us all over town before you can find the final and I am figuring in the price of gas to see how we can get it done.
I do believe overall that it is an inexpensive family oriented sport. It is getting more expensive for us though as the price of gas rises and we will have to do it strategically if that price goes up too much. (one change for us might even be to take the car vs the van because of better gas mileage.)
It really is a matter of you perspective I believe. When we were a two income family, this would have been a non-issue (which saddens me to think of all the $ we blew!)

I was going to put that one down too, but I was afraid I might be targeted with a lightening bolt next time I was out in the woods.
04/20/2011 at 10:30 pm #1946872I’ve started donating blood to cover caching costs 😉 but I don’t see us slowing down anytime soon. The benefits to the family make the extra expenditures worth it for me.
04/20/2011 at 10:58 pm #1946873I suppose I should also post a serious answer to the question. Sunshine and I are both semi-retired so it is easy for us to make time for geocaching. We cache with other geocachers and in the 4-1/2 years since we started have attended over 60 events. This Saturday we will be going to our sixth event this year. Geocaching is very much a social thing for us so it wouldn’t easily be given up. Instead of going out for dinner we’ll make a dinner out part of an out of town caching trip. Both of our SUV’s get moderately good gas mileage so we don’t mind the cost of the gas required for an outing. Our usual trips to caches are in the 30-50 mile range as we don’t have many large pockets of caches closer. So I don’t think current gas prices will affect our caching much. $5 a gallon may be a different story.
04/20/2011 at 11:14 pm #1946874Somebody publish a new cache in Central Wisconsin and I’ll see if I can control the urge to chase after it or not 😆
