We did some bike trail caches yesterday and one cache was a short walk through Wild Hog Weed taller than I am. I had never seen this plant and was totally unfamiliar with it. It looks like Wild Parsnip, but is much taller and has white flowers. I knew it wasn’t Wild Parsnip so I just forged through it. Needless to say I now know it is just as toxic as the parsnip. Itching isn’t too bad, but the giant welts and swelling on my face is not very pleasant. Too late after the fact I found out exposure to sun increases the swelling and blistering. Too late was after more caching on bikes today.
I would much prefer a few ticks.

In more ways than one.- unfortunately. I got some great advice from a friend on natural healing for a deer fly reaction. It involved chewing plaintain leaves, then applying them to the affected area now and then throughout the day. It worked wonders. I did not have itching, but a huge welt at the bite site and my eye was getting swollen shut. Might look into the efficacy of that cure for what ails you.

Poison ivy itches more, but the reaction from the hogweed is more painful. Just when one of the burns starts looking better more blisters start appearing. The only good thing as that it doesn’t seem to spread. It’s been 4 days now since I contacted the plant and it isn’t getting better, but it also isn’t getting worse. The sensitivity to sun is the worst part. Between geocaching and being a landscape contracter I’m outside whenever it’s not raining. So far my treatment has been keeping the burns clean, soaking them with Domeboro’s Solution and applying Hydrocortosone cream. We’re going camping this weekend and just my luck I’ll probably step in poison ivy.
06/22/2011 at 4:17 pm #1949189Sorry you’re feeling the effects Bill. Hope your recovery goes at least a bit smoother from here on out. I would agree that the exposure to sunlight deal has to be one of the more inconvenient things about your symptoms. Sending good thoughts your way, my man.

Be careful this weekend, since your natural immune system is being stressed already. Even a skeeter bite could react more than usual!

Well that sure makes me feel better.

At the west end of the Wild Goose Trail in Clyman. The caches were the Happy Trails Series.

Eek! Good to know as my 4 year old niece is tackling that trail. Feel better soon!
