I just have to gush a bit. I’m sitting down to log our finds of the day. We had such a great day caching today. I headed out to the Kettle Moraine ST – Northern and did some of the caches in the park. It was just what geocaching is supposed to be; a nice hike in the woods to find some ammo boxes loaded with goodies. We climbed a tower for an EC (GC18MJB) and the view was amazing! And to top it off, the weather was perfect!
Along the trail we met a family, the dad having a GPSr dangling from a belt loop (as did I). I asked if they were geocaching and their face lit up as they explained that they really wanted to but they didn’t know what they were doing. I talked with them for a little bit and explained a few things about caching. I even offered to help them find a nearby cache but they wanted to get going. I hope that they keep trying, they seemed like a nice outdoorsy family.
We also got the treat of finding WI’s oldest cache: GC3B1 Or at least, that’s what the cache description states. I had thought that I had heard of a different one also claiming this, not sure which one is right. But whether it’s the oldest or just pretty stinkin’ old, that’s still an accomplishment!

The actual name of the area you were in is Pike Lake State Forest. The cache you found is the oldest “active” cache in Wisconsin. If you like finding caches in this area you can return on Ca$h Ba$h weekend. The 5 caches that I hid for the event are all in this park including a really fun family oriented field puzlle.
I’m glad you enjoyed the hike up to GC3B1 Pike Powder Hike. Yes, it is Wisconsin’s oldest “active” cache. It is also Wisconsin’s oldest cache. It was not Wisconsin’s first cache. That distinction lies with a cache south of Sheboygan GC3D that was never found or maintained.
Ah yes, that is true that this is the forest that we were in. I should have been more specific. And thanks for the clarification on the cache.
I am still very disappointed that I can’t go to the Ca$h Ba$h. 🙁 My friend needs to sort out her priorities. The nerve of her getting married in MN on that weekend!

To this day, the Pike Powder Hike was and is still one of my favorite caches. It is what geocaching really all about. I did that one for my 200th a couple years ago.
I will be doing these next weekend (I am staying at site 1) for the Ba$h.
