Last year was my first Westbend cash bash event and was wondering how many others have completed the task of filling there bingo card while they were there?
If you didn’t fill the card when you were at the event would you if there was a payout for the top few spots for teams to complete there cards and turn them in first?
Has the WGA tried this or does it just make a nasty grudge match or would it be a cool amazing race. If your asking yourself were does the wga get the money for something like this just have a fee to sign in to be in the amazing race…….Just thinking out loud!!!!!!

…No. How would you pick the “top few”? The fastest? Does faster make someone a better geocacher?

No again. I seriously hope that it is never considered. Geocaching and racing are not a good mix.

That’s a choice that some geocachers make. I like an FTF as much as the next guy, but I try to use common sense and restraint. Had about 20 new ones come out near me last night, about 10:45. I could have gone out and spent a few hours caching in the dark in my tired state, but I chose to go to bed instead. Someone else stayed up all night and got the majority of them (all but 1), but I’m ok with that.

04/05/2012 at 2:39 pm #1959047Even though this “race concept” to find all of the caches in a series or at an event is popular with some the majority do not embrace it. In an effort to eliminate some of this competiveness to find all of the caches at this year’s Ca$h Bash the hides will be more spread out than last year, require more hiking and there will be a few more difficult and time consuming hides.
04/05/2012 at 3:36 pm #1959048There was some “let’s see who can get all 50 first” competition the first few years. There may still be some in the future. But it’s not done as part of the Mega Event agenda.
If you want to compete with someone on a personal basis at the WBCB, fine by me. I’ll get out of the way if I see you coming!We almost filled our card the first 2 years. Even won $250 the first year without filling it. We enjoy meeting the out-of-state cache teams that come to explore Wisconsin and the Kettle Moraine area.
As far as the FTF race, I actually got 5 last year, on the way to WB. I hadn’t registered yet, and was surprised to get those on Friday afternoon.
I used to race for FTFS. Now, if it fits in to my schedule, and no one else got there ahead of me, I’ll log the FTF. I’d rather see the area by daylight, and hope the CO picked a nice spot to stop and enjoy the area.By the way… the WBCB is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and is not a WGA Event. We have a presence there and are happy to support it. The Sunday Pancake Breakfast IS a WGA sponsored event. You have our permission to race for the first pancake! 8)
04/05/2012 at 5:55 pm #1959049I will never forget the Cache Bash where we were logging a cache and stamping our card near the Washington County Fairgrounds when a certain group drove up to GZ (150 feet from the nearest road/driveway) as we dove out of harm’s way. I don’t want to mention any names, but at least one of the “racers” is very active in the WGA (I don’t believe (s)he was the driver.)
Let’s just say “racing” is not the way we like to promote geocaching to local law enforcement and other government officials.

Like BigJim said, racing for and FTF is a personal choice. I stopped after realizing how meaningless it really is. A month old cache is just as good as a brand new cache.

People tend to speed (a few people got pulled over the first year), park where they shouldn’t, not put the caches back properly, and try to cheat. It is better to keep it a fun, relaxed family-type weekend. If you want a race type cache, check out the cache series “The Amazing Race” by Dr. Dolittle and Goldie Diggers. They always put out amazing stuff and I am sure this will be Amazing – GC3BQ68 😀

Well stated! I’d rather enjoy a family-fun weekend… Why rush from place to place? Life goes by too fast as it is.
As for FTFs… I’ve had just 4… none planned and all happened just by the luck of being in the right place at the right time.04/06/2012 at 3:03 am #1959056Personally, I like an FTF every once in awhile, but have lost a bit of the excitement in grabbing FTF’s. Kudos to the Milwaukee area cachers who do a great job in this area spreading the wealth. I know of cachers down there who when four new caches are placed in an area, they chase one to get an FTF and leave the other three for their fellow cachers to log as FTF’s. Now that is what the sport is about. Wish we had more of that type of attitude in the valley.
As far as the Cache Ba$h, I like the way they do it now – making it very family friendly. Last year our group got a number of the Cache Ba$h caches, but we also did other caches in the areas we were. We enjoyed the slower pace immensely and stopped to smell the roses along the way.
For us, geocaching is about the the adventure, the quality of the caches, the challenge of the puzzles and the fabulous friends we have made along the way!

04/06/2012 at 3:50 am #1959057So lacknothing what you are saying is some local cachers have rocks rattling around in there head and just don’t understand the game as well as others? Why I thought some of the more senior cachers that have been making finds for awhile have set the example years ago that some of us newbie are trending to…. I mean really this is an awesome sport for the family I totally agree but the ftf is like a getting candy when you where a little kid and thats a great feeling when your creeping up in the age.
