Candidates,
It has been suggested that the WGA Cache of the Month program has become irrelevant and should either be modified to become more relevant or discontinued.
Should the COTM be continued? If so, what changes do you think would make the COTM more active?01/20/2014 at 7:00 pm #1974114Maybe a modification to COTM to COTQ to reduce the number of awards to Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter with a COTY for each area that may or may not come from that years COTQs. With the addition of FAVs at Groundspeak, the really cool caches tend to be found by the number of FAVs given.
01/23/2014 at 12:18 am #1974115When COTM first began I think it had an excellent purpose picking out the cream of the crop caches in the state. As time has gone on it seems more like a popularity contest focusing more on the cache hider then the quality of the cache. Now with Geocaching.com doing favorite points I don’t know that COTM really has a purpose any longer.
01/23/2014 at 3:17 am #1974116When the BOD decided to make the change to a regional COTM, I think it was well received and it went well for a period of time. It was nice to be able to recognize more caches that deserved mentioning as the previous method pitted cache against cache for the whole state and that too often became a popularity contest where good caches in high population areas always edged out those good caches in less dense areas and the new method allowed these other caches to make the page.
As time continues, it appears that fewer folks are nominating and/or voting for COTM. The favorite points while a good way to judge some caches, it also tends to favor the highly cached areas.
I like Commanders idea of COTQ/COTY.
maybe even work it to recognize the cache of the season – the best caches to find during each season (nicest trip, most challenging snowshoe to the cache, greatest fall foliage view, etc)Disclaimer : Always answering to a higher power.
02/05/2014 at 1:11 am #1974117Hi Team Black-Cat, I would like to see cache of the month be in a way that is is just not a popularity vote. There is alot of awesome caches out there that are placed and since there may not be alot of cacher’s in a rural area, they seem to most always go unnoticed. I wanted to answer this question and took me a long time what to write. Hope that I answered your question.
