Been a long time since we were heavy into geocaching and an even longer time until recently since I’ve even logged a find… We’ve been over the numbers thing for a long long time… And, I will tell you, it truly is about the journey.. Anyhow, the team and I spent the day hiking some of the trails in Lapham Peak Park and decided to do one of the multi’s there.. The cache really need some attention and I logged it as a find and then logged a “needs maintenance” note for the cache as well… As I paged through the rest of the logs looking for more maint. notes I see that some people log each wpt. as a “found it” … Just curious as I don’t remember doing this.. Not trying to stir up a hornets nest here but is that common nowadays??

Reminds me a bit of the discussions over logging temp caches at an event… which we did do… we treated each of those caches as a separate find.. “You put a name on them and they could have stood by themselves” was the thinking at the time..

    What’s your opinion??

A multi will get cachers to the same spots as several stand-alone caches at the various waypoints, but the experience of a multi is different. Many people talk about “wasting” all that space for only one smiley. If cachers want lots of smileys, go for the power trails. A multi is a multi for a reason, and seekers of that multi should respect that.

Some owners of multis will allow cachers to log a find for each waypoint. If that is the case, then it is up to the individuals to decide how they want to play the game and how many finds to claim on that cache. If the CO does not mention this, then finders should respect this and log only one smiley for the cache… for signing the log book at the final.

With all of the newer technology, some people don’t even know how to enter the new coordinates from each waypoint. Some don’t even take the time to learn about the different types of caches that are out there. Yes, the sport has evolved, in ways that are good and not so good.

As for the original question, we do one smiley for one multi, even if the CO allows otherwise. That’s how we’ve played the game for six-plus years.

Wow, Bill that sure woke me up quick on a Sunday morning to see your name here. I just looked up the cache I suspected that you found and I was right. The dates of the multiple logs corresponded with a WGA Picnic at Lapham Peak. If I remember right the reason the CO gave the option to log all waypoints was to increase the number of find possibilities that day. Something like the temporary finds that were still being done then. Won’t get into that for those who don’t know what I am talking about. Today’s multi hiders put a lot of work into their waypoints and I don’t think they really expect large numbers of finders. It’s more like the long hikes hides from the early 2000’s that are rarely placed nowadays. I’m sure this topic will stir up some interesting comments, but none more interesting to me than seeing your name here today. Yes there are still geocachers named Bill from Sussex. It looks like the WGA Picnic in September will be somewhere nearby and it would be great to see you there.

Response to the responses thus far… Yeah, I agree with all mentioned above… If you remember way back when we got started in all this it was 2002 and things were WAY different.. However one underlying tone was that “you play the game the way you want” and that still remains.. I’m not trying to point fingers at all here.. I still believe it’s your game…do as you wish..

Thanks for the clarification on the multi logs being a part of WGA picnic…makes sense to me.. And, yeah, that’s the way we did the temp caches back then… Am I to understand there are no temps at campouts anymore?? Gosh, I’m remembering going out early to hide quite a few of them!!

Always had a ball and it feels good to be back out cachin again.. Hope to meet up on the trails real soon…and Mr. Greenthumb why wait ’til September?? Hope to meet up with you again real soon too!!

BTW… I’d love to get a few more of those “long hike” multi’s out there again!! 🙂

    Welcome back!
I don’t think logging each stage of a multi is the norm. I have seen a few where the CO mentions that it is ok, but it IS a lot like logging temps at events. Some do, some don’t.
The WGA hasn’t had temp caches at events for a few years. (Too much drama.) We have opted instead to recruit local geocachers to place permanent caches in and around the park that the event is being held.

    No and Possibly Yes.

Depends on the Multi Cache. There are so many variations of this category.

If their is an actual container with log at each site and the owner has stated that it’s acceptable, do it if you choose. If the cache owner doesn’t want this to be done, and it it is something they don’t want there are solutions for that.

I enjoy Multi Caches and do them whenever I can but they often take a lot more time. When I have done a Multi run I personally look at it as a day where I found as many caches as stages I had to discover. The Door County Challenge is a perfect example of the type of Multi I reference when I agree with logging individual stages. Each stage was a step up from the one before. The owner allows each stage to be logged and many people have taken the opportunity to log each stage.

I think the problem arises when geocachers don’t read the cache page and play by their own rules.

Welcome back and a pleasure to “meet” you.

There are some old and new great long multi caches out in the Southern Kettle Moraine if you are interested.

Please note: my comments are mine alone and may not necessarily reflect an official stance of the WGA Board of Directors.

Welcome back! When you said Lapham Peak, I figured I knew which one it was. For that picnic only, the cache owner had placed physical logs at each stage to sign and allowed multiple logs. One on our team wanted to count each one and one of us did not. We were not as long into the game at that point in time and the one who wanted to log them all…won. If that picnic had happened now, we’d both be solidly in the “what’s the big deal?” camp. We loved that cache. Sadly, I do think nice multis often get passed by in this day of numbers. What I always find interesting now that favorite points are part of the game is just how many multis do have higher numbers of favorite points. I know we don’t worry too much if we come across a multi in our PQ and see it hasn’t been logged in awhile. Usually they’re still there.

I really don’t think people should log each stage as found, and I don’t think that is a common practice anymore. If people are in it for the numbers there are plenty of guardrails and power trails. If they’re going to go find one that’s a multi they know what they’re getting themselves into. I think that the people that are attracted to the “journey” will go for the long multis and the ones that are attracted to the numbers will go for the PNG’s. I am glad that there’s something for everyone in this sort of game. Personally, I’d take a long multi over a hundred guardrail/sign post caches any day.

Multis are not for everyone, it seems. Mine don’t get nearly the traffic that my p&g’s do, especially since they are in rougher terrain also. If you want people to be able to log each stage, make it a series.
Then again, I remember a certain 26 (or something like that!) stage multi that used to exist. I whined that it was a lot of effort for just one smiley, but it is a smiley I felt very proud of.
