Just a friendly reminder to make sure your caches are in place and ready to be found BEFORE submitting them to the reviewers.

09/16/2014 at 1:48 am #1977183I should mention that this post is about a recent FTF attempt I made on GC5D1MR. When I first went out to seek the cache, I didn’t find it. Then the CO went to place the cache and e-mailed me that he intended to place it tomorrow, and that I should pay attention to the date of placement before I look for a cache. I did end up making the find along with another cacher tonight.

09/16/2014 at 4:20 pm #1977184One time I scouted out an area for a cache placement and found a spot. I didn’t have the container with me but I did have my GPS unit. I marked the spot and got the coordinates. I then went home and went online to submit the cache.
I then made myself a sandwich and sat down to have some lunch before going back out to place the container when the publication notice came in. I was like, crap. That didn’t take long to publish. In fact, it was only 15 minutes after I submitted it.
I rushed out there to place the container but thankfully my area doesn’t have the FTF hounds that yours does. The cache was found the next day.
09/16/2014 at 5:07 pm #1977185That’s why I’ve never submitted a cache to be published until after the container was in place. It helps to know that we do have several FTF hounds in the Green Bay area.

09/16/2014 at 5:29 pm #1977186Yeah I wasn’t worried when I made the submission without placing the cache because new caches in my area can go unfound for a day or two. Plus, reviewers typically publish a cache about 2 to 3 days after submission. So to see my cache was published 15 minutes after submission was surprising to me.
09/17/2014 at 12:45 am #1977187In my area it better be there because, more often than not, they get published at something like 2AM (our main reviewer must work 2nd shift or something) and the FTF folks WILL jump out of bed immediately to go find it even if it’s 50 below zero and snowing. They would NOT be happy to get there and do an extensive search for a cache that hasn’t been placed yet.
I don’t think they’d be mean about it but you would get razzed and it would not go away….ever.
09/17/2014 at 3:41 am #1977188Not as uncommon as one might think. That’s happened to me twice that I can remember. One time I met the CO in the parking area as I was leaving. I asked if I could sign the log there since I had already searched GZ for 15 minutes. 🙂
09/17/2014 at 3:44 pm #1977189My reason for placing a cache before I submit is partially based on the guidelines stating that you have to do so. Also, if you can’t get back to place the cache after submitting, you’re gonna have a few disappointed cachers. Plus you never know how quick the reviewers might be. If your intent is to simply place a simple container, you might as well place it while you’re there getting the coords. The CO of the cache I’m talking about e-mailed me stating that he intended to physically place the cache on Tuesday and not Monday. I would say don’t submit until the day you intend to place.
